What You Can Expect

Day Trip to Atlas Mountains from Marrakech with Optional Visit to Takerkoust Lake and Kik Plateau

Discover the Ourika Waterfalls on your day trip to the Three Valleys

Taking a day to explore the stunning scenery of the Atlas Mountains is a highlight of any trip to Marrakech. You get to see how different life is in the villages of the valleys and what a truly beautiful country Morocco is.

Begin your small-group day trip with a pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad, and  board your air-conditioned 4x4 or minivan.

Hear about Morocco’s rural way of life as you drive into the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. Admire the snow-tipped peaks as you head further into the spectacular range, and after roughly an hour, arrive at the Ourika Valley.

Ogle the greenery and terraced slopes and stop to admire the Ourika’s stunning waterfalls — a lovely contrast to the rugged mountain slopes.

Walk to the falls and take photos of the tumbling waters, and then visit a local Argan Oil Co-operative, where Berber women extract the oil of Argan nuts to use in cooking and cosmetics. Then visit a bio-aromatic garden where plants and herbs are cultivated for medicinal, aromatic and decorative purposes.

Drive on into the beautiful Oukaimeden Valley. Climb to 5,900 feet (1,800 meters) up a winding mountain road, passing Berber villages of stone and adobe perched on the steep slopes.

Stop for lunch at a restaurant (own expense) or opt to visit a local family home for your meal. Meet your welcoming Berber hosts and enjoy a homemade lunch of salad or soup, tagine with couscous and a dessert and drinks.

Continue to the third valley — the Asni Valley high in the mountains. View Mt Toubkal, at 13,665 feet (4,165 meters) and pass the Asni’s apple, walnut, peach and almond groves.

Afterward, return to Marrakech or, if you’ve upgraded, take the 1-hour drive to Takerkoust Lake. Admire the azure artificial lake framed by snow-capped mountains and pass traditional villages to the Kik Plateau, a limestone mountain plateau with epic views over the verdant valleys below.

Your trip then ends with a drop-off at your Marrakesh accommodation.

Really enjoyed personal knowledge and information. Would recommend. Be prepared for the climb up to the waterfall! Or should I say the descent, your legs will know about it. We had a good driver and it was good to try the local home cooked tagine. An experience that enhanced our visit , not to be missed. Easy to book from our hotel, easier than trying to get Reception to book for us!

Our guide, Abdul, arrived exactly on time at 8:20am. That's a good sign. I like that! Beautiful hike up to the falls, great lunch at a Berber mountain village! Highly recommended!

A fantastic day out in the mountains. The waterfall trip is a scramble so wear appropriate footwear, the path is also lined by souvenir shops so it is not remote but still good to stretch the legs. The guide was excellent and really showed his enthusiasm for his country and the local villages. The lunch was delicious and the views incredible as it is more off the beaten track. Seeing all the restaurants by the river and hearing about the work they are doing to protect against flash floods was really interesting. I would not visit the waterfall again but would go back to the other valleys in a flash. Highly recommend if you have the time.

A wonderful day out in the mountains, very highly recommended. Our driver, Mustafa, was a great guide and driver. The trek up the ravine was a bit hard going for me, but our trek guide was able and apparently willing to help haul my out-of-condition body up to the cascade and cafe. I'm an unfit 68 year old, but still made it. Others, younger and fitter, had no problems. Fascinating tour of the villages, stopping at a women's co-operative where they make and sell argan and other essential oils, teas and treatments. Lunch was delicious, in a beautiful setting surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The day was probably the highlight of a brilliant few days in Marrakesh - don't miss it!

Amazing Tour, if you are visiting the Atlas mountains, make sure you book this one as it takes you to the top most village on the mountain, and you get to have home made Tagine and Couscous under amazing snow mountain peaks, the scenery is amazing. Ask to guide about the local Berber people and culture, watch the kids waving at you while traveling 8km to get to school. Check out the only high school in the entire mountain - purchased by the King and converted from a hotel. Trek to the waterfall a slightly difficult trek, kids not recommended and visit the argan oil house. Lots of photo opportunities. This is a full day trip and involves lots of driving in a comfortable car a mercedes Transporter in our case. Our guide Abdul was amazing, he came from the mountain village and told us all about the culture, the struggle, the changes or no changes in the last 10 years. It is an amazing trip, and thank you Abdul, the best to you and your family, and we will definitely visit again!
