What You Can Expect

Private Tour: Marseille City Sightseeing and Chateau d'If

Enjoy beautiful views from the ancient prison at Chateau d'If

At your Marseille hotel, you’ll greet your guide and board a private vehicle destined for Marseille’s historical highlights. Kick off your sightseeing tour with a spin through the city’s center: descend to the atmospheric crypt of Basilique Notre Dame de la Gard and absorb panoramic vistas of Marseille Vieux Port (Old Port) from a hillside perch.

Proceed in your private vehicle to Marseille Cathedral (Cathedrale La Major) to admire its elaborate façade before you head inside for a guided tour: interminable domed ceilings and candy-cane striped columns are a feast for the eyes.

Next, travel to the 17th-century Fort Saint-Jean, an ancient fortress home to the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations and a picturesque garden showcasing Mediterranean plant species.

Your next stop is Marseille Vieux Port (Old Port), where you’ll board a boat to the islands of the Frioul archipelago and visit the prison and castle of Château d'If, the inspiration behind Alexander Dumas’ seminal novel, The Count of Monte Cristo.

After thorough exploration of the sea fortress, return to your vehicle via boat and bid your guide farewell after drop-off at your Marseille hotel.

Guide rearranged her schedule to accommodate our change in plans. She was wonderful and very knowledgeable.

This tour was very good. The guide knew the places of interest around Marseille like the back of his hand. We were not able to go out to Chateau d'if as the seas were too rough for the ferry and this was cancelled however, every attempt was made to make up for not being able to visit the Island. We found our guide to be very professional and knowledgeable. He wanted to make our tour experience as pleasant as possible. We wished he could have shown us more.

3 star rating: Worth doing September 2015

I was able to see a lot of Marseille but there were times that seemed rushed and others too long. The tour ended abruptly when, due to traffic, the guide dropped me off at the port instead of parking and taking me to the boat for the ride to Chateau d'If. As a result, I went to the wrong area and missed the boat ride. Very disappointing.
