Journey into the unspoiled landscape of Maui’s east shore on a 12-hour trip to explore the area’s towering waterfalls and dense stands of bamboo, journeying along the iconic Hana Highway along the way. This hiking trip and scenic drive along the rugged eastern coastline of Maui is a great chance for nature lovers to explore a different side of this island beyond the beaches and luaus.
Start your day at the Maui Park n’ Ride at 6am, continuing on a 2.5-hour drive along the famous Hana Highway, a rugged road on Maui’s east coast that winds past a range of incredible scenery and more than 50 bridges. Soon you’ll reach the trailhead for your hike to the waterfalls, journeying into a dense natural environment referred by locals and visitors alike as “old Hawaii.”
During the course of your 4.5-mile hike you’ll proceed past a collection of cascading streams and pouring waterfalls, also known as the “Seven Sacred Pools,” thanks to its sublime beauty. Proceed along paths cutting through dense groves of bamboo, continuing towards a number of other waterfalls buried deep in the forest, some towering as high as 400 feet (122m).
At the half-way point of your day, take a break for lunch, featuring a choice of turkey, ham, peanut butter and jelly or a veggie burger. Throughout the hike you’ll also be given snacks including cookies, fresh fruit, chips and water to help keep you going. Return back to the trailhead and loop one last time around Eastern Maui heading back to central Maui where you’ll finish your trip.
