Maui is known for its legendary sunsets, so why not watch it while standing atop the tallest peak on Maui? Here at nearly 10,000 feet (3,050 m) on the summit of Haleakala, watch the horizon explode in orange and bathe the island in light. As the oranges turn to blue and violet on the gradual journey towards dark, look towards the sky and watch as stars begin popping out through the heavens. The sunset experience is completely different than visiting Haleakala for sunrise, and in addition to the magical evening light show, guests will visit the Kula Lodge Marketplace on the journey up the mountain, and dine on a tasty, three-course meal at Café O’Lei past dark.

Highlights

  • 5-hour Haleakala sunset tour on Maui
  • Watch the sun descend over the lowlands and see neighboring islands from the volcano's summit
  • Stop at the the Kula Lodge Marketplace and the Haleakala National Park headquarters
  • View the volcanic crater from the Haleakala Visitor Center
  • Enjoy family-style dining with a 3-course dinner at Cafe O'Lei at the Dunes
  • Travel by comfortable coach with hotel pickup and drop-off from select Maui hotels

What You Can Expect

Haleakala Sunset Tour and Dinner on Maui

End your sunset tour with a 3-course dinner including dishes like sirloin steak.

After the convenient hotel pickup in an air-conditioned coach, sink into a comfortable seat for the journey up the mountain. Make a stop at the Kula Lodge Marketplace where you can experience the art and culinary talents of Maui and Hawaii's renowned artists and craftsmen.

After a stop at the Haleakala Park Visitor Center at about 7,000 feet (2,134m), make the final, winding, push towards the volcano’s magnificent summit. The crater overlook is just below the summit at 9,740 feet (2,969m), and there’s a good chance you’ll be one of the only people there. Gaze upon the colorful crater with its smooth, lunar cinder cones, and peer across the orange horizon to the peaks of the Big Island in the distance. After staying to watch the stars twinkle high above the volcano, descend the mountain for a three-course meal near sea level at Café O’Lei. Meal options are both meat and vegetarian, and the evening concludes with a convenient drop-off right back at your hotel.

I'm so glad that I booked this tour. Our tour guide Henry was the best! He was so funny and knowledgeable and what made it even better was that you could tell that he really loved his job. He was gracious enough to take everyone's pictures so we all go the perfect shots with the sunset behind us.
The sunset was absolutely spectacular, something I will never forget. A definite must of when in Maui!

Really enjoyed the tour! Our driver and tour guide, Henry, was fantastic. He gets 5 stars!!! He was entertaining, attentive, thoughtful and informative, and a safe driver. The sunset was beautiful, and the ride up and back was great and fascinating. I'd do it again and highly recommend if you want to see the crater and at the best time of day for pictures.

The tour was excellent. The guide was excellent. He gave us a lot of good information about the crater, the plants there, and Maui. We would highly recommend the tour. The only issue was the food included for dinner at the end. The food was not the greatest and our guide told us all drinks that were non-alcoholic were included. The restaurant tried to charge us for the soda we ordered only because our guide told us the soda was included. My husband argues with the restaurant staff and we did not pay but in the future, what is included should be accurately explained. However once again the tour itself was excellent and the crater was a highlight of my trip.

This is an excellent alternative to driving Haleakala yourself. Henry is an interesting and amusing driver who managed the curvy steep road well. Unfortunately on the day we went, the weather was not cooperative and it started to cloud up and then rain before sunset. However, Henry could see that the weather was changing and hustled everyone into place for excellent pictures and viewing of the crater before it could no longer be seen. We also got to witness a solar eclipse which was really neat from such an altitude. The dinner was good. The only reason for 4 rather than 5 star rating was completely due to weather which is uncontrollable by the tour company. We enjoyed this trip.

This was a great tour! Loved seeing the crater--almost more of highlight than sunset.

Henry, our driver, was excellent. He was a skilled driver, very knowledgeable and entertaining.
There are many switch backs up and down the volcano, so some in our group had some motion sickness.
The view inside the dormant volcano and the sunset were well worth a visit.
Thank goodness we were down on flat ground when a mechanical problem with the bus and this stranded us until a replacement bus could come and transfer us to another vehicle. This was done without too much delay and we were taken to the restaurant for the pre paid evening meal. This is when things started to go more seriously wrong. Cafe O Ley provided a tolerable meal, but their staff very obviously were aggravated by our delayed arrival. After rushing us through our meal they told us our buses were waiting outside to transfer us to our various resorts. They didn't even serve us the coffee that was promised on the menu. There were no buses waiting outside, and so 24 passengers were stranded outside not knowing what was happening. I did spot one of the waitresses hurrying off home. Two different groups in our party took taxis rather than wait beyond the twenty five minutes we were stranded there.
The chaos seemed to have been caused by all the company's buses bring over extended by a cruise ship being in Lahaina, They obviously could not cope when one of their buses had to be taken out of commission .
Hopefully this will be a rare occurrence for future travellers. Thank goodness our bus had completed the worst of the road's challenges coming down the steep side of the volcano before some of the mechanics failed.
