Tamara, our driver, and Alvin, our lead bike and guide, were great. They had the utmost concern for our safety, offered an abundance of information, very supportive, enthusiastic, and made the whole experience fun.
Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate for us to see the sunrise, but it happens. I appreciated that they company had warm jackets, wind pants and gloves for us as it was rainy and very cold while we waited for the sunrise. Jo, our driver and K, our guide were great! I was a little apprehensive about the ride, but I stayed in the back and was fine. Breakfast in the little town after 18 miles of riding was great. Definitely try the donut on a stick from the local bakery. We finished at the beach and watched the surfers as Jo and K loaded up our bikes. This trip was fantastic and a must do if you're in Maui.
This was, by far, the best part of our trip. Alvin picked up up promptly at 2:45 am as promised. After a short ride, we went to Mountain Riders office where we met up with the rest of the groups, were provided a jacket and gloves, coffee, snacks and a brief description of what to expect. We loaded into a larger bus with the rest of the group and headed to the top of Haleakala. I have never seen so many beautiful stars, meteors and satellites floating in the night sky before! The views were amazing and you could almost forget that the temperatures were hovering around 35 degrees. Yes... It is cold up there, so dress appropriately. Long pants, sweaters, layers.... are needed. After watching the amazing sunrise, we began our 26.2 mile trek down Haleakala on bikes. You do stop several times on the way down the hills and thankfully, the brakes are very good on the bikes and helmets are provided for safety. Amazing trip and very thankful that we booked through Mountain Riders. Just a few things to be aware of: 1. It is VERY cold at the top of Haleakala. You are over 7,000 feet above sea level. 2. Make sure you grab a spot near the metal fence area way before sunrise so that you get a full, unobstructed view. 3. Our tour guides were great. They were funny, kept us moving and walked us through the entire process, but they don't do this for free. They work for tips just like everyone else on the island and they are not shy about suggesting the amount of tip they feel is needed. Some people were taken aback by the approach, but we were already planning on tipping since we did everywhere else on the island, so it wasn't a surprise that they would like to be tipped. Just surprised that they stated how much they thought we should be tipping. It isn't a cheap trip to take, but it is worth every penny to watch the sunrise. Absolutely magnificent and breathtaking.
The experience was once in a lifetime. It was cold and wet when we started cycling but that didn't matter, bright sunshine burst out in the last section of the bike ride. The instructor and driver were excellent, competent and made the day amazing.
A great experience that everyone should do while in Hawaii. Our guide was knowledgeable and very funny made 3 am bus ride not seem so bad. He also was very helpful biking down the hill.
The tour was definitely worth getting up early for. The tour description mentions the sunrise and the bike ride but it doesn't mention the amazing starlit sky that you see when you get up on top there pre-dawn. Once you see it you'll understand why they place observatories in the middle of the Pacific on top of dormant volcanoes. No lights and not pollution. It is simply incredible!
The sunrise was magnificent. It is cold on top and they provide you with a wind jacket and pants. However, if you have another jacket and hats/gloves - bring them.
The bike ride down was exciting. The tour guide Bobby stressed safety and his instructions and the quality bike equipment made the day very safe. The group is small and he placed the riders with concerns up near him. It went well for everyone.
Bobby is a great guide. His personality, jokes and engagement with everyone made the day fun. We learned a lot Hawaii and the island and quite a bit about Kentucky hillbillies in general.
This is a tour worth taking.
A must do when in Maui. For someone who had not been on a bike in 20 years, it was an awesome experience. Our guide, Bob, was very funny. The 26 miles is all downhill, so there is no pedaling. The first 19 miles are all turns, so be prepared. This tour provides the heavy jacket, pants, and gloves to wear while you are on top of Haleakala waiting for the sunrise.
This tour was AWESOME!! The staff were very knowledgeable, organized, and prioritized safety. The bike ride was a true thril with amazing scenery. The only disappointment was the rain that cut our trip short. I would highly recommend to anyone going to Maui that likes a little adventure and beauty.
Probably the most beautiful tour on the island and these guys have it down to a science on getting you where you need to be on time. Awesome bike ride and its all down hill. You should still have some decent skills on a bicycle when you do this. My daughter was uncomfortable riding down so she rode the bus down with us as we went. The bus and the riders stay together And there are plenty of stops as you go.
Amazing experience. One of only two bike rides that go all the way from the top to the beach...mountain riders.... Others stop part way down...we lucked out without knowing that! The guides are experienced doing this exact excursion for more than twenty years for one, and thirty for the other. Safety is stressed through out and you feel confident you'll be okay! The morning is early but doable. Bring warm clothes in layers...you take them off as you descend as it's about 35f at the top and 80f at the bottom. You can't go wrong. Probably one of the coolest life experiences I've ever had. Oh and did I mention it's a rush going down a volcano! Thanks to mountain riders!
Great! We had a little bit of clouds but it was an awesome sunrise. when they tell you to dress warm THEY MEAN IT! Don't think Hawaii warm. It was freezing. It would have been great if the little gift shop up top opened at 2 AM also Had an AWESOME time!
so fabulous! we went in december and it was FREEZING at 4am, but the sunrise was spectacular. Even my kids, who were not happy about the early hours, were impressed! The bike ride was all downhill and so much fun. This was truly a highlight of our trip!
Epic experience! Watched a spectacular sunrise in the supplied and necessary cold weather gear. Then a short trip out of the national park to the bikes and cruise a sweet 26 miles (mostly) downhill to the beach. Driver Alvin and guide Roger were fantastic and proved safety was their no. 1 priority.
Great time! The sunrise was magnificent and we were super glad to have the jackets and gloves they loaned us. The ride down was very nice and we enjoyed the the cowboy town on the way down. Definitely would recommend the tour and company.
This is a very exciting and beautiful trips I have been on. The sunrise was execellent and the bike trip down the mountain was exciting and great fun.
My husband and I had a great experience with Mountain Riders. We did the sunrise bike tour, it was our last adventure of our honeymoon and it was a great way to close the week. Our guides were fabulous I wish I could remember both of their names but I know our driver was Kay Both of them had so much info to share, were really thorough explaining what to expect throughout the day and above all had our safety in mind. It was a great experience!
It's early but worth it. I heard this was a must do in Maui. We loaded into a 15 passenger van and pulled bikes in a trailer. The sunrise was amazing and the company gave us coats pants and gloves as needed. Safety was clearly a priority on the way down. Bobby led our group with great humor with Dante at the wheel of the van. Scenery and weather were awesome. We didnt ride from 10,000 feet but rather got on our bikes at about 7,000 ft. Not all cyclists are created equal and I spent a lot of time riding my brakes harder than I wanted as we were not allowed to pass and the line had timid folks ahead of me. Despite what you hear, the road is smooth and wide and not terribly steep. almost no pedaling involved except for the fact that if you brake too much you don't coast as well going into the flat areas - so timid bikers screw it up for those behind them. We stopped in a small town and ate breakfast which was nice. The ride ended all the way down at the beach. Overall I enjoyed this tour a lot! we were back at our hotel before noon and a little tired so we parked ourselves on the beachfront all afternoon before heading to Mama's Fish House for dinner!
This tour was a once in a lifetime experience! The Mountain Bike Company is a superior company that really made sure everyone arrived safe and sound at the beach-friendly, knowledgeable guides Bobby and Kay were the best!

Fantastic tour with Mountain Riders from the top of the volcano to watch the beautiful sunrise and ended all the way to the beach. I did this same tour 15 years ago and it was worth it again!
Awesome experience, the wait was worth waiting for when the sun started to peek through the clouds and the light came out. The bike downhill was also a great experience. I was hesitating at first but our guide made me comfortable . Really great experience
Such a great experience! the tour guides let us have our own time to watch the sunrise and the bike riding was so fun. Best to do this tour because it is much safer to bike when the company controls traffic and you don't have to worry about getting hit by a car which you would if you just went on your own. Highly recommended. Most fun thing I have ever done in Maui!

This is a must do experience. It literally feel like you are sitting on top of the world. The stars in the sky before the sun starts to come up are breathtaking, and then the colors are amazing. The day starts very early - our pick up was at 2:40am but is worth it. The driver from Mountain Riders Kay was on time and nice as could be. Very important - DRESS WARM! Seriously, it is crazy windy on top of the volcano and very cold! Do not underestimate the temperature! The van follows your bikes down the mountain during the ride, so you can easily take off layers once you get off the top. When you get to the crater, they tell you to stand by the guardrail, but if you walk up the path to the right use your cell phone flashlight!, you can get up even further and find a rock to sit with an unobstructed view due east. And wait for the sun to actually come up! Once sunrise is done, they pile you back in the van and drive you down past the entrance to the park - you can't ride bikes in the park and don't book with anyone who says they will! The bikes used here are heavier than mountain bikes, but they are easy to control. I am the most risk averse person but I loved the ride down - even the multiple curves and switchbacks were doable! The whole ride is just over 26 miles and very little it requires peddling. We stopped once just before cowboy town to get some food - there was only one place open as it was Christmas Day - and they actually stopped us a mile before that because there was a steep uphill, with strong headwinds and coming rain. But after food, in a light rain, we rode the rest of the way all the way to the beach! A really great ride! The folks at Mountain Riders are extremely nice and attentive. They are very concerned for your safety and your comfort the entire way down. If you are uncomfortable with the ride for any reason, you can simply ride in the van. Oh, and they take cool pictures of you and your family on the bikes!
