This Maui horseback riding tour is run by real 'paniolos,' the Hawaiian cowboys who make their living by ranching, roping and riding. On a 1.5 horseback ride, you’ll canter across pastures with sweeping views looking out at the island’s north shore, and trek towards a valley with hidden waterfalls that splash through the West Maui rainforest. If you work up an appetite while up in the saddle you can upgrade to a barbecue lunch, which is served on the ranch at the end of your ride with a view looking out towards the coast. This is real ranching and real riding out in the Maui country!

  • 2-hour horseback-riding tour through Mendes Ranch on Maui
  • Follow your Hawaiian cowboy guide through taro patches, past plantation homes and along scenic trails
  • View spectacular sights of the Pacific Ocean and Hawaiian countryside
  • Opt for a BBQ lunch including ribs, chicken and side dishes
  • Suitable for riders of all levels!

What You Can Expect

Maui Horseback-Riding Tour with Optional BBQ Lunch

Trail Riding in Maui

Your Maui horseback tour begins at the Mendes Ranch Corral, where you’ll meet the paniolos and your horse before embarking on a 90-minute ride.

8:45am Tour:
This morning ride canters across rolling green pastures and down towards Waihee Valley, where you’ll ride along the wave-battered coast with the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop. You guides will snap photos of you up in the saddle, and you’ll gradually ascend your way up the mountain on the return trip back to the corral.

11:30am or 12:15pm Tour:
For the afternoon ride, you’ll journey up Waihee Valley, where lookout points provide panoramic vistas of waterfalls tumbling through the valley. Snap photos of the island’s central valley and coastline off in the distance, and enjoy the cool, misty uplands set high above the ranch. You’ll return along the edge of Waihee Valley, where taro patches and plantation homes offer glimpses of Maui’s past, before returning to the Mendes Ranch corral and optional barbeque lunch.

For both tours, lunch consists of chicken, ribs, salad and beans, and is accompanied by beverages and a dinner roll for a filling meal on the ranch.

Breathtaking views! Guides were patient with first time riders. The galloping was cool. The best horseback ride in of the four islands.

Lunch was awesome, horses were great! Took a little long to get on them since there was such a big group going, having to pair the horse with the rider, but once we got underway, it was awesome! Great views, kind of scary going up and down mountains but horses were gentle and did great!

In such little space to write, this tour was the best tour we took on our honeymoon. *Staff is amazing, personable, helpful, knowledgeable, oh and AMAZING! *Lunch was tasty. *Such beautiful scenery, and it was a cloudy day. *20 min drive from the cruise line port. You will NOT be disappointed.

This by far is one that you have to try! The Mendez Ranch is beautiful! 300 + acres nestled next to the cliff. As a first time rider, Trevor and Butch showed us how to ride. Guys were very funny and knowledgeable about the island. We were even able to Gallop with our horses once you felt comfortable riding. A true adrenaline rush. From beginners to advanced, this was one to experience! Recommended to go before May so you can see the whales from the lookout point.

A good all around family trip. Views of the ocean for most of the horseback riding trip. Knowledgeable and competent trail guides.
