What You Can Expect

Molokai Day Trip from Maui

One of the churches built on Molokai by father Damien

Your Molokai day trip begins in the morning on the docks of Lahaina Harbor, where you’ll step aboard the Molokai Princess for the two hour crossing to Molokai. Grab a seat on the upper deck if the seas are nice and calm, and it’s common to see breaching Humpback whales as you cruise between islands in winter.

Once you arrive at Kaunakakai Wharf, your local guide will meet you at the docks and welcome you to the island of Molokai. The first stop is at Pala’au State Park in the cool and forested uplands, where a short walk will lead to a lookout of the Kalaupapa Peninsula. It’s down on this peninsula where Father Damien helped care for victims of Hansen’s Disease, and along with Mother Marianne Cope—who were both officially declared saints—helped bring dignity, hope, and light to a land of tragic despair.

Following the sobering lesson in history, make the drive to Molokai Coffee Plantation for a cup of island grown coffee, where you’ll hear the history of coffee on Molokai and the work that goes into the brew.

Just across town is Purdy’s Mac Nut Farm, where you’ll learn to crack nuts with specialized tools and the process of growing macadamias. Spend some time in Kaunakakai just wandering the street at your leisure, and visit a church on the rural coastline that was built by Father Damien.

Throughout the day you’ll experience Molokai’s low key island lifestyle, eventually return to the ferry wharf for the two hour cruise back to Maui.
