History lovers and those looking for a fascinating day trip from Maui are sure to enjoy this exploration of naval history, along with some sightseeing in downtown Honolulu.
Begin your day with an early morning arrival at Maui’s Kahului Airport, boarding a flight for the quick 35-minute trip to Honolulu. Meet your guide at the airport and drive by air-conditioned minivan to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. During your visit to this iconic military base and historical site you’ll have seven hours to check out exhibits such as the USS Oklahoma Memorial, USS Arizona Memorial and USS Missouri. Your guide will have your entry passes ready and waiting, ensuring you maximize your time at each site.
Check out the USS Arizona Memorial, starting with a 25-minute documentary chronicling this famous military base and battle site, and then continue with a boat trip out to the memorial itself. The ship lies directly below a long white building which covers the midship-section of the sunken remains of the boat.
Meanwhile the USS Missouri and USS Oklahoma Memorial can be found on Ford Island. Take a 30-minute guided tour aboard the USS Missouri, with an additional hour to wander this massive boat at your leisure. Then head to the USS Oklahoma Memorial, which remembers the 429 crew that died when the ship was destroyed during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Before leaving Pearl Harbor, you may also have the chance to visit the USS Bowfin submarine, along with museum display halls titled ‘Attack’ and “Road to War.' You’ll also enjoy an included lunch on site and be able to purchase additional snacks (at your own expense).
As the day continues, climb back aboard your minivan for a trip to the sights of downtown Honolulu. Explore the city’s Iolani Palace, Ali’iolani Hale, Kawaiahao Church and King Kamehameha the Great statue. You’ll also get to see the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, cruising past Ala Moana Beach Park on the way there.
At the conclusion of your day on Oahu, return back to Honolulu airport with your guide to board your flight back to Maui.
