Mornington Peninsula Cheese, Chocolate and Wine Tasting Day Trip from Melbourne

Goats Cheese Samples at Main Ridge

An easy day trip from Melbourne, Mornington Peninsula offers an abundance of local flavour and beach side charm. After morning pickup at your Melbourne hotel, relax in an air-conditioned mini bus. Stop at Arthur's Seat for expansive views of Port Phillip Bay and Victoria's dramatic coastline.

Pop in at the charming Main Ridge Dairy to sample a variety of creamy goat cheeses and say hello to the resident herd of goats that provide the milk. Continue on to Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm to indulge in an array of fruit-flavoured treats, including strawberry wine and liquor, chocolate-dipped strawberries and juicy, fresh-picked berries during harvest season.

Next, visit the cellar door of T'Gallant Winery to taste cool-climate varietals like chardonnay and pinot noir. Admire the beautiful scenery of rolling hills as you learn about the wine-making process.

We then head to the quaint sea-side town of Flinders, for a tasting of handmade local chocolates, with plenty of free time after to explore this Artisan township and purchase lunch (own expense) from one of the many local cafes, bakeries or restaurants. During the summer season, enjoy a walk on the shore with leisure time for a swim or a game of beach cricket.

Save room for cider, as you'll next head to Mock Red Hill for a presentation and tasting of their organic ciders. Finally, toast your tour with a final
tasting at one of the many the award-winning Boutique Vineyards on the Peninsula. After your delicious day, relax on the return drive to Melbourne, where you'll be dropped off back at your hotel.

Unfortunately our trip was cancelled due to lack of numbers but the very friendly person offered the Yarra Valley tour which was a highlight of our stay in Melbourne. Our guide Grant was entertaining and knowledgeable and the group were good fun. The produce at Gateway was delicious, Cider, wine, chocolate all delicious, lunch at Rochford Estate lovely. My husband and I took this tour on New Year's Eve and it was a wonderful way to spend the day. The best part of our trip was our guide, Leon, who was not only knowledgable and interesting, but unbelievably kind as well.

We were picked up near our apartment and drove about an hour to our first stop at a goat farm for a cheese tasting. You could also order coffee and cheese to take home here there is a cooler in the van to keep it in throughout the day. It was a bit cool when we started out but the sun came out and warmed us considerably by the end of the day. I would recommend bringing both a light jacket and sunglasses/sunscreen.

From there, we visited 3 wineries, a chocolate shop where we had a delicious lunch, a cider room for a tasting, and a strawberry farm. The van is a smooth and comfortable ride and the stay at each location was a good amount of time, probably between 30 minutes and an hour each.

Leon was kind enough to drop us back in town in spite of the impending New Year's Eve traffic. Once back, we realized we had mistakenly grabbed his bottle of wine instead of our own. As we were leaving town the next day and staying at an apartment instead of a hotel, the trade off was going to be a bit tricky. Leon went above and beyond by meeting us at the restaurant we were having dinner at by bike due to road closures! with our bottle and insisting we keep his to enjoy as well.

The entire day was wonderful, but it is really Leon's kindness that stuck in our memories. Thank you, Leon!!

My spouse is an accredited wine enthusiast and we have taken close to 2 dozen of these tours world wide. Our guide on this tour was one of the most knowledgeable and very patient asking the many, many questions everyone asked. In the 2 instances I saw where he was uncertain, he texted a mate to verify his answer. His upbeat attitude and knowledgeable enthusiasm made what could have been a very long day feel fun and comfortable the whole time.

Lots of stops, never too long on the bus. Great tastings at 3 wineries, a cider brewery, a local cheese maker, a strawberry farm and lunch at a chocolate shop. Also some great photo ops at lookouts and beaches.
