What You Can Expect

Milan Cooking Class and Market Visit

Visit a local market to buy the fresh ingredients for your cooking class

After meeting your chef at his or her home in central Milan in the morning, stroll to the local market to buy ingredients. Take in the various stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruits and meat. Listen to the gregarious banter between sellers and customers. Your chef will explain how to pick out the highest quality ingredients.
Back at the chef's home, start by learning how to make fresh pasta or gnocchi. Learn how to mix and kneed dough to try to get the consistency just right. Next up: learn how to cook a traditional Italian meat dish. On this day it might be spezzatino (beef stew) or saltimbocca alla Romana (veal with prosciutto and sage)
Finally, it’s time for something sweet. Depending on the availability of ingredients and the seasons, the dessert might be gelato, a fruit tart or the sweet pudding of crème caramel.
After everything has been prepared, it’s the best part: sit down to eat! The meal is paired with two glasses of delicious Italian wine. End the lunch with an espresso, like any Italian would. While your experience concludes after lunch, you’ll get to take home a recipe leaflet and a diploma as evidence of your new culinary skills. Travelling to Italy from Australia for 2 weeks, the highlight was Clara's cooking class. It was such a great day. The small group of 6 is just the right size in that all participants can be involved. The food prepared required technique which chef Clara was able to demonstrate and assist preparation with patience. Celebrating the food prepared and served at a long table lunch, accompanied by wine made a great day shared with great company.

I have traveled extensively throughout Europe the past 10 years and have visited Italy 5 times. I have scheduled tours with Viator in the past as well as with other tour companies. I had booked and attended the Milan Cooking Class an Market Visit on my birthday, September 10th. I have to say that in my 10 years of travel, this by far was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I had always been interested in Italian food and cooking -but just when I thought that I had known it all, I had met Clara. She is extraordinarily talented and educated in Italian cooking having attended chef school for 3 years, sommelier school for 3 years, and is currently attending pastry school. To further enhance the experience, this class takes place in Clara's apartment. Upon meeting, the menu is discussed over coffee and an approximate hours visit to the fresh market occurs. Clara is an extremely dynamic individual, very knowledgeable, gregarious, generous, kind, warm and outgoing personality, extremely passionate about her craft. She is also very patient, and on the occasion interjects humor into the layperson's misinterpretation of what Italian cooking is all about. She spends a good quality of time taking the multiple course meal step by step without rush. The day of my class also happened to be my birthday, and our prepared meal was finished off with our delicious endeavor, great wine, laughter, and dessert complete with a singalong happy birthday to me. I would highly recommend this class without hesitation. It was one of the greatest experiences in my life that I have encountered!!!

The day started fairly early with a coffee at a local coffee shop and a trip to the market. It's a great experience to visit with a chef who is passionate about seasonal Italian produce.

Following this we went to Clara's beautiful apartment for our cooking lesson- we were talked through how to make gnocchi, risotto, stuffed sole, stuffed artichokes and a fresh strawberry tart. Each of us learned new skills and gained knowledge- including why you should never drink cappuccino after 11:00.....

We finished the tour by eating our dishes, with a wine chosed by Clara to accompany. Delicious!

I would definitely recommend for people who enjoy food and cooking, and who would like to get more insights into Italian cooking and culture. Thanks Clara for a great time!

Wonderful experience! The visit to the market was unique and our chef, Clara, gave us many pointers and good advice even before we had reached the kitchen. The cooking class was an ideal combination of theory, tips and hands-on experience for all six students. We learned what to look for in order to get the real authentic product. Clara shared her expertise smilingly and answered all our questions. The menu - all typical Italian specialties - was very varied. The meal was delicious and gave us an opportunity to socialize with our new international friends. A truly satisfying experience from the beginning to the end. Next time I am in Europe I will bring my wife with me to take another of Carla's courses. Bravo!

This was simply a great way to spend a day. From the market visit to a morning cooking in the kitchen to a lunch around our host's table, the Milan Cooking class really made our weekend. Clara is not only an excellent chef and teacher, but also a gracious and friendly host, keen on getting everyone involved even us kitchen-adverse types. The trip was well organized, efficient, fun and, most importantly, delicious! Really appreciated the focus on North Italian food and customs. Thanks and looking forward to another course soon!

Clara took us to a great market and then back to the kitchen to cook. Clara obviously loves her job and it comes thru in her instruction as the 5 of us worked with her to prepare a meal. We had fun in the kitchen and then ate what we had prepared which was quite good. If you are a foodie then this is what you are looking for.

This was brilliant. Made pasta from scratch all the way through to cooking it!! Loved the markets walk through and the discussion/comparison between stalls and their products. The result was delicious too!! I would do this class again without hesitation!!
