Swiss Alps Bernina Express Rail Tour from Milan

Bernina Express Rail Tour to the Swiss Alps from Milan

Well known by its moniker ‘the Little Red Train,’ the Bernina Express was designed to climb the Swiss Alps with ease. A testament to engineering work completed more than a century ago, the train is still able to complete the cliff-clinging Bernina Pass on a route that now has UNESCO World Heritage status.

Travel from Milan to Switzerland in the morning, and relax on your coach journey to Tirano. After some free time in the town, board the Bernina Express and gaze out of your window as the historic train passes through the idyllic stretches of Northern Italy and the Swiss Alps.

Ride over the spiral viaduct of Brusio, and along the Bernina Pass to Engadin. After 2.5 hours on board, watch the scenery change from windswept gorges and snow-clad glaciers to the chic chalets of St Moritz.

Hop off the train to enjoy roughly 1.5 hours of free time in the town. An elegant vacation spot that’s popular for winter sports, St Moritz has a bounty of attractions to keep you busy. Stroll the lake, ogle the snow-specked mountains that ring the town, enjoy lunch or browse the local chocolatiers to sample Swiss chocolate. All food is at your own expense.

In the early evening, return to Milan by coach. Your tour of Northern Italy and Switzerland finishes with a drop-off at the start point.

Beautiful sightseeing all around. The bus stops in Tirano for a bit to see the church there and get lunch before the train ride. Try the pizzoccheri pasta! It's a buckwheat pasta cooked with chunks of potato and cabbage with cheese. Very very good much better than it sounds. The bresaola is amazing as well. The train ride was beautiful and very neat. Bring a sweater or sweatshirt. The train windows are open for pictures and you WILL get cold. It was Mid August and in the 50s going through the mountains while it was in the 80s in Tirano. It would have been nice to spend more time in St. Moritz as we only had about an hour to explore before meeting the bus to head back.

Fantastic day. Superb guide and driver and the train journey is fantastic. Everything organised like clockwork. The only negative is the lunch organised by the guide was expensive and not very tasty - there are plenty of options in Tirano and better if everyone can choose where they want. The main waiter in the restaurant was not very welcoming and didn't let the group sit outside, claiming the tables were not available, despite not a single table being used the whole time!

Amazing train into the Swiss Alps with outstanding panorama all around! Glaciers, beautiful lakes, scenic landscapes are all breathtaking! The only disapointment is actually St Moritz... the stop is short and the Town itself is extremely expensive to shop. Good for pictures by the lake and buying chocolate!

This is a relaxed, well planned trip! A great way to see a bit of Switzerland. Our tour guide was wonderful! The only disappointment was the weather- it was overcast and rainy so the views weren't the best. Highly recommend!

This was a great day trip. The scenery from the bus on the way to the train station made the time pass quickly. The recommended restaurant for lunch was good and served our food quickly, which gave us time for a quick walk about town. The views from the train were breathtaking and it was easy to move from side to side on the train to capture all the view with your camera. The guide was great at letting us know to be ready for a quick picture opportunity as we zipped along.

Wonderful trip, long day, the tour guide was nice, but the elderly people on the tour were rude. A bit pricy but wonderful views of Swiss. Short time to spend time and a very long day of travelling.

This was a great tour - loved the alps and the train trip. Really breathtaking scenery and well worth the tour - it's a must do!

The only disappointing aspect was that the tour guide told us he could get us a special lunch at a local restaurant for I think 16 euro. Don't be fooled into thinking you have no other options even on a Sunday as all the restaurants are open with lovely views. We took the offer along with all our tour believing it was our only option and found we were served slop on a plate which was inedible. It left our tour hungry and we had to buy ice cream. You are packed into a upstairs dining room with a hundred other tour bus people feeling more like you were in a mess hall. Shame on the tour guide for giving everyone the wrong impression - he obviously gets a cut.
