What You Can Expect

Get an early morning start with 6am pickup at your Mombasa or Diani Beach accommodations and make the 45-minute drive to Shimba Hills National Reserve in a 4x4 safari Land Rover, traveling through a landscape of cashew nut and palm tree plantations.

Begin your first game drive of the day upon arrival at the park—the early morning hours are often the best time to spot and photograph wildlife. Watch for bush babies and stalking leopards, then scan the trees for black and white Colobus monkeys and some of the park’s 22 endemic bird species. The park’s grasslands are home to Zanzibar red bishop, croaking cisticola, and the distinctive red necked spurfowl.

At 11am meet a KWS game ranger for a 45-minute downhill hike to Sheldrick Falls, a 69-foot (21-meter) cascade surrounded by tropical forest and lianas. After making the more strenuous return hike, break for a picnic lunch with views across the park to the Indian Ocean. Continue through the park on a second game drive as you make your way to the Shimba Hills National Reserve Entrance. This tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel at roughly 4pm.

A moderate fitness level and sturdy footwear are required for this active tour.
