Begin your art-oriented shore excursion by meeting your guide at the Monaco cruise terminal after your ship docks. Climb into a climate-controlled minivan and make your way toward your first stop, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Travel along the spectacular Middle Corniche road, known for its graceful curves and sweeping views.
The first stop on your tour is the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. It was once the home of Madame Ephrussi de Rothschild, and you can visit the villas stately apartments to see one of the finest collections of porcelain in the country. Walk through the beautiful gardens surrounding the villa – there are nine in all – with fountains, flowers and fantastic sea views.
Next, head for Nice and the neighborhood of Cimiez. This was once where Queen Victoria spent her winters, and is now home to the two art museums you'll visit independently.
The Chagall Museum (Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall) contains an excellent array of Marc Chagall's work, including his well-known series of paintings based on scenes from the bible. The Matisse Museum, housed in a 17th-century Italian-style villa, is home to the largest collection of Henri Matisse's work anywhere. Matisse lived in Nice from 1917 to 1954.
At the conclusion of your museum visits, you'll be returned to Monaco and the cruise terminal.
Please note: You'll visit the museums independently; your guide will not accompany you inside.
