What You Can Expect

Bikini Beach, Blue Lagoon and Rio Grande Day Trip from Runaway Bay or Ocho Rios

Relax on the beach in Jamaica!

Following morning pickup at your hotel in Ocho Rios or Runaway Bay, board a comfortable minibus or coach for the drive along the island's scenic northern coast.
The journey takes 3.5 hours, most of it traveling through Jamaica's interior countryside. Watch the small villages, banana plantations and sugar cane plantations pass by out the windows. Pass English playwright Sir Noël Coward's house, named Firefly, which is now a National Heritage Site.
Once you reach Portland Parish, drive through Port Antonio to your first stop, Bikini Beach. Spend 2.5 hours here strolling along the palm-fringed shoreline and swimming in the calm waters. Sit down for a traditional Jamaican lunch before re-boarding your vehicle to head to the next stop.
Continue to the Blue Lagoon, where you'll spend an hour of free time exploring one of Jamaica's most famous natural attractions. Take a refreshing dip in the mix of salt water and fresh spring water and admire the otherworldly blue of the water. Hear about how the lagoon was once thought to be bottomless, along with other local legends.
Finally, take 1-hour trip on a 30-foot (9-meter) bamboo raft down the Rio Grande. Travel downstream toward where the river empties into the Caribbean Sea. During the ride, watch for wildlife like tropical birds and swallowtail butterflies.
When your adventure is over, enjoy transportation back to your hotel in Ocho Rios or Runaway Bay.

This is a very long day, almost too long of a trip from Montego Bay. However, the blue lagoon is one of the highlights of Jamaica so I consider it worth it. But, be aware you will be in the car for six hours.

The day started off with rafting on the Martha Brae River because of the drought conditions on the Rio Grande. It was a 45 min relaxing trip with great scenery. Then it was the 2.5 hour trip to Port Antonio. The driver stopped at many sites though for pictures and the guide told us about the areas we were in so we were occupied for the long drive.

We took a boat ride at the Blue Lagoon, which is absolutely beautiful. There is the opportunity to jump from the boat to swim in the Blue Lagoon. But, there was no ladder to get back into the boat. My husband had to swim across the Blue Lagoon to get to shore. He is a former college swimmer so he was able to do this, but there is no way that most people can do this so swimming in the Blue Lagoon from this trip is limited to strong swimmers.

We then moved on to Frenchman's Cove where we had lunch. This was at 2:00 PM so be sure to eat a good breakfast. We had as much time as we wanted to swim there. The beach is spectacular and not too crowded.

Then it was the 3 hour trip back to Montego Bay. It was a very long day, but very enjoyable with a great driver and guide.

Super far drive BUT worth the trip for the day. I have always dreamed of seeing the blue lagoon in person and it didn't disappoint me. Frenchman's Cove was another interesting and beautiful place to go. We got to hang out with a few locals and that made the trip more memorable. This is my 65th birthday to my mother and she loved the Martha Brae river rafting (had to do Martha Brae instead of Rio Grande because it was low tide) Our Tour guide Ali Smith was very funny!

Knowledgeable guide, who did his best to accommodate. I actually was expecting to go to Frenchman Cove, which was part of my original itinerary when booked but it changed between my booking date and excursion date to Bikini Beach, which in truth was not that spectacular. The Blue Lagoon was the obvious highlight.
