Traveler Tips

You don't need a guide there - everything is explained in both German and English and you really get to know individual people and stories through the excellent, in depth displays.
A good tour for those not interested in reading all of the written information at the site.
The buses never showed up at the end of the tour and we all thought Viator should arrange shuttles instead of relying on city buses.

Our guide James did a great job of giving us enough background information to set up the visit to Dachau. James kept us on the move and we were able to better understand the atrocities committed here.

James was friendly, knowledgeable and did his best to answer all our questions. He picked a great, easy to find meeting area. Given the subject matter I'm having a hard time finding what to say but anyone interested in learning I would highly recommend trying this small tour.
Excellent Tour would highly recommend
Karina_M, Jul 2022
The small group tour of Dachau was very good. James, our guide was very knowledgable and dealt with the difficult subject matter very respectfully. He was a thoughtful tour guide. Smaller group was a real bonus. Would highly recommend.

Family group including 2 teenagers. James was excellent giving us lots of factual information and side stories in a compassionate and sympathetic way. We all learned a lot. A sobering but necessary experience. Highly recommend.
Thank you for the tour

James has been a great guide, we’ve learned a lot. The trip was very well organized so we could focus on the visit. It’s a difficult topic but James was able to explains us very well the historical context and how life was in the camp. Thank you for the tour.
James was a great guide for the Dachau tour.

Comparing it to Auschwitz and learning about the beginning which lead to the events from 1933 to 1945. James was very knowledgeable and provided a great history lesson.

Fabulous and respectful tour. Our family of six really found this tour powerful. James was so knowledgeable and a great guide.. if there is anything I’d sugggest is that it’s hard to hear and so a mike and ear phone would be very helpful. All 6of us get that way. It wasn’t because of the guide but because everything echos. Thanks for a great tour!
Memorable and moving

James gave us context and insights that really helped view Dachau with perspective and deeper understanding. He was numerous, compassionate and really knowledgeable. He also helped navigate crowds and logistics to really enhance the overall experience. There’s no way we could have experienced the memorial in the same way without his expert guidance.
Memorable experience!

Guide James did an awesome job!!! Kept us away from the crowds. Gave good tips. The remembrances were very touching. Enjoyed using the train ride.

Somber but Meaningful Experience
Nicholas_S, Jul 2022
It isn’t a happy place to visit but a meaningful one to reflect on the horrors of the past. Our guide, James, was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. He provided an awesome experience for us and even gave us suggestions on places to eat and where to get the best beer in Munich. Would recommend James to anyone looking to go on this tour.

Stop hesitating… book this tour! So much better with a professional.
Joseph_C, Jul 2022
Absolutely the best tour guide I have ever had. Please, please take this tour with James, it is worth paying for his expertise rather than saving a few dollars and trying to see Dachau on your own. Honestly, his tour should cost more than twice as much, it is that good. A lifelong memory for me and my 15 year old son. James’ knowledge and respect for Dachau are endless, and he made our trip to and from the site easy. Meeting in the morning at Marienplatz was easy. Drop off at the end of the day was flexible - end where we started, or hop off the train at a more convenient station. And the start/end times were as promised. At the site, I felt we saw absolutely everything, and there is so much to see (and so much to miss if you are not there with a professional). After about 30 minutes at the camp, I realized that I no longer needed to read the information posted for visitors — I just needed to sit back and trust our guide. His knowledge matched and exceeded what was written at each stop. I am sure my visit with him was more efficient than trying this on my own. James if you read this, thank you for an unforgettable day; truly a day my son and I will remember for life.
Definitely a to-do activity
Nancy_L, Jul 2022
James was very knowledgeable about Dachau and the overall history and experiences of the prisoners there, as well as the general history of the Nazi party. Though sad, it was an excellent experience Additionally he made recommendations for restaurants and other activities while we were in Munich
Great tour leader.
Hilary_P, Jul 2022
James gave us a fascinating tour and was extremely respectful of all that had happened at the camp. He was very mindful of other groups as we moved around. He worked hard to tweak the tour to maximise our experience and find shade on a v busy, hot day. Impressive effort, thank you James.
Comprehensive Tour of Dachau
Brandon_P, Jul 2022
The experience was of course somber and very moving, but the tour was very well-organized. James presented the information and history of Dachau in an appropriately reserved, but very thorough manner. He was very knowledgeable and we learned a great deal! He also was extremely thoughtful in making an effort to find us shade whenever possible on a really hot day. Everything about the tour was efficient, yet we did not feel rushed at all. The only thing to note is that the listing mentions a max size group of both 9 and 14 people, but our group was a bit bigger (I believe 17 people). However, it didn’t really impact us at all and I would still very strongly recommend this tour to anyone!
A powerful and essential experience.
Braedan_L, Jul 2022
Great guide who was well educated and clearly very thoughtful about everything. A powerful experience. I think it should be your duty to visit one of these sites if you have the opportunity.
Incredibly moving experience
Cody_R, Jul 2022
Incredibly moving experience. Powerful and somber. The tour guide, Eric, was fantastic. He was able to relate and make connections that I will not forget. The museum and the monuments make it such an important visit for all people.
Important history

Love the tour, James was a great guide! He was very good about sharing as much information about the camp and the people there. Was also good about giving the group breaks and finding shade when possible. Also liked that it was a smaller group so we could hear everything that he was saying and got to ask questions.
Memorable Tour
Denise_R, Jul 2022
James provided a wealth of knowledge about the history of Germany and Hitler leading up to Dachau as well as the other concentration camps. He also did a great job keeping our group together and navigating around other groups, making sure we saw all the sights without spending time just waiting. And his talking was very clear and easy to understand.
