While you have to brave the crowds in summer - totally worth it.
We had a wonderful day trip to the castles with our guide Carl. He was quite knowledgable and got us there on time for the tour times for both castles that they had pre-arranged for us. We were very pleased as the lines of people waiting for tickets and for the public bus to get up part of the hill were very long and had we not done this tour, we would have taken some pictures and turned around and gone somewhere else for the day. Carl got us on a private bus up the hill, and had things timed so that we were able to see everything and have a quick lunch in town as well. We would highly recommend this trip.
Our guide was wonderful. He answered all of our questions and made sure we saw everything we wanted to see on the tour. Wonderful tour.
I am very happy with the tour. The guide was punctual and nice. He clearly explained the tour to me as well as provided me with an overall view of the castles, their history and surrounding areas. His Spanish was very good. His suggestions about restaurants were helpful and good
We ran into the G7 meeting which caused major road closures but the tour sent an e-mail indicating this in plenty of time to alter or cancel the trip. We decided to still go as we wanted to see the Alps and our driver was quick to help us as he was from the area and made our trip extra special by taking us on a great tour of region. Great driver..great car..great tour company.
My family and I loved this tour. Our tour guide was phenomenal. He was super professional and gracious. He took us to a non-touristy lunch spot where we could really experience the local cuisine. He went out of his way to make us comfortable and even bought my dad an ice cream when he discovered how much my dad loves ice cream. The castle tours were terrific. If I could give this tour six stars - I would. !!!!
Karl was a good guide. The castles are suitably incredible. Karl worked as a "fixer" on a number of occasions, navigating our way with ease. It's good to be with somebody who knows everyone there. Visiting this place could be a nightmare without a guide on a busy day, think about a personalized tour
What is a trip to Munich without visiting Neuschwanstein Castle! Our Tour guide Carl was great and the ride to the castle could not have been better. He was very knowledgeable and catered the trip to our liking. I highly recommend this trip!
Our driver, Karl, was teriffic. He picked us up in a beautiful S-class Mercedes and we were off an a grand adventure. His knowledge of the history of the castles and Ludwig II was exceptional. We even made a quick detour stop to an additional location along the way that added great background to our trip to the castles. Really outstanding in every way.
Fantastic private guide. Very knowledgeable guide who was able to answer all of our questions. I give the guide an A++ grade. The tour itself was phenomenal. Definitely a 5 star plus tour.
Wow. What can we say? Karl, our guide, was outstanding. These castles are amazing. Far more impressive than I could have imagined. Karl managed to get parking right near to where we had to be, then found a coffee spot with few other tourists. Between castles Karl drove us to the local town for a local lunch (again with no tourists). Excellent day. One does get rushed through the castles, but from the reviews I'd read I was psychologically prepared to not be able to just stop and wonder in awe. Having said that, I still saw what there was to see. The lookout bridge is quite scary - one presumes it is safe and well maintained???
Our tour guide Carl came in a brand new Mercedes 500S. He knew all the scenic places to stop for photos. He was knowledgable, attentive and very personable . We were able to see everything without much waiting . It was a great experience!
The private driver was very good and the scheduled tours went well. Was a great way to spend the day.
The castles were very interesting and greatly enjoyed. There is some hiking up hill and a lot of steps. No complaints except it was very busy with lots of tourist. We did the private tour which was well worth it. The guide knew all the "ins". And really helped us navigate our way from tour to tour.
Great tour! Our driver was wonderful and stopped on the way to the castles at an old beautiful church so we could look around. He also gave us tips for other places to go and some local wine selections. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because my father had some trouble with all of the steps and couldn't go into either castle. There was no mention anywhere that it wasn't recommended for people with walking issues. Even with taking the carriage there is a lot of uphill walking and many steps. The Hohenschwangau castle was something that we could have missed, but they are practically right next to each other. If you are worried about the walking I would recommend missing Hohenschwangau and saving your energy for Neuschwantein. It was beautiful!
Karl was an excellent driver and guide. Even provided us with umbrellas in the steady rain. Explained to us how to wait for the horse and carriage and how much time to allow to get up to the castles for the scheduled tours. This information did not seem to be widely available to people buying individual tour tickets. Only drawback was that the planned cafe for a stop was not open so Karl took us to a nearby town for some unplanned time which was nice.
The insides of the castles were rated "very cool" by my teenage sons. They were disappointed that we didn't get a solo tour as we had presented it to them. Arranged for a private tour, but the actual part through the castles was a group tour--was not clear in the description. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and acquired our tickets by "skipping the lines" along with a "private ride" to the castle locations (did not go in with us, he went for a swim in the lake while we went on the group tour) and drove us by various lake views of the Alpine Region. He spoke very good English and helped us to understand the Bavarian culture and took us to a traditional, non-commercial lunch spot. It was a bit pricey for what turned out to be a group tour.
The tour takes in two fine castles, superb scenery, and our driver Thomas was kind enough to make sure we also saw the wonderful Wieskirche, a rococo masterpiece. It was a pity that the weather was so bad, but then that's out of our control...
Driver was excellent. Only downsides were that we had hours to kill before the tours began and the tours guided by castle staff were too short and did not meet anticipated expectations.
The driver and car was good for this private tour, but I would not use it again. I originally thought there would be some private tour of the castles but this is essentially just a car and driver for the day plus help in getting the tickets which would be valuable during peak periods. It is easy to drive and park at the castle yourself.

Too much "short cuts and back road" experience- lots of extra driving time, not as much flexibility as advertised
For the price charged, the value was not there. Driver was good but arrived late 10-15 minutes. We were able to visit and tour both Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, but no other location, which was disappointing. We were also disappointed that the Marienbrucke was closed for repairs.
Not recommended. The guide was excellent. But the castles were over crowed. Our guide saved our day by taking us to alternat locations, Linderhof and Oberammerau. The planned tour was a bad idea but the tour company and our guide saved us . These two castles are on every tour companies list and as a result are swamped.
There was vry poor communication between Viator and the local guide, who said he had not been told we had booked (and paid for) more than just Neuschwanstein itself. So while we lucked out and managed to get tickets to Hohenschwangau, on the drive down to the castles we meandered through rural Bavaria and then had no time for the walk around the lake or the optional third castle, which was what we wanted to do. Also, there were two groups that travled in two separate cars. Te other car clearly had the knowledgeable guide. We had his colleague, who obviously was not a guide but just a driver who the guide had found. So we simply drove in silence there and back, following the guide's car. The drives were interesting and the scenery was lovely, as were the castles, but it wasn't what we were expecting from a "private tour."
