Roses interlaced with the barbed wire in the gate that leads to the gas chamber.
While the original bunkers at Dachau were removed, the memorial site outlines where the 34 buildings stood. Someone had laid flowers on one of the memorial markers, which was one of many throughout the camp.
The rectangles represent each bunkhouse with one of the original guard towers standing in the background. The bunk houses were designed to hold 200 prisoners each, however towards the end of the war they were completely overfilled, holding up to 2,000 prisoners per bunk house.
The perimeter fence was designed to make escape impossible. The SS kept watch over the camp from 7 watchtowers. The instant a prisoner entered the prohibited zone he was fired upon. They would have to pass through the machine gun fire, traverse the ditch and into an electric fence with barbed wire.
A haunting but very informative trip to Dachau.
