What You Can Expect

Day Tour to the Enchanting Forts of Nizwa

Interior of Jabrin Fort, Oman

Hop aboard your comfortable, air-conditioned coach or minibus at your central Muscat hotel and journey out of the city to begin your full-day trip.

As you travel, listen as your guide tells you about Oman’s rich heritage and history. Soak up the views of the oasis towns of Fanjah and Birkat Al Mauz, and trace the line of the rocky Hajar Mountains during your drive southward.

After roughly 1.5 hours, arrive in Nizwa, Oman’s former capital and once an important trading hub, located as it is on a major route between Muscat and Dhofar in the south of the country.

Drive through the palm groves around the town, and reach your first stop — Nizwa Fort. Head inside with your guide and learn how this picturesque outpost was built in the 17th century to ward off raiders as you roam the towers and courtyards.

Enjoy the far-reaching views from the battlements, and afterward, stroll around Nizwa souk, where vendors sell everything from rugs and pottery to silver Bedouin jewelry.

Peruse the wares, and if you wish, buy some as souvenirs (own expense). Then, continue to the old oasis village of Tanuf and palm oasis town of Bahla, famous for its fort and earthenware pottery.

Next, drive to Jabreen, home to one of Oman’s most beautiful forts. Leave your vehicle and explore this lovely 17th-century fort to admire its impressive wall and ceiling paintings and decorative woodcarvings.

Afterward, relax on your ride back to Muscat, where your tour finishes with a hotel drop-off.

Though the travelling time is quite long, the end result to see the forts, castle and other sites is well worth it. Plus the air-conditioning was very efficient and welcome.
Rasheed our guide was very knowledgeable and made the visit all the more memorable.
An excellent trip and very good value.

Excellent value for money with a guide who took plenty of time to talk about the history of his country and the places he took me to. The only disappointment was the closure of Niswa Fort until later in September, but I saw and experienced so many other things that I really can't complain.

I'd booked the coach tour but as i was the only passenger, had a car and driver to myself. Rasheed was courteous and knowledgeable and made sure that I was comfortable at every step of the way. An excellent and instructive guide - thank you.

We were picked up on time by a car. The driver was very nice and well informed. We thought we were going on bus. But this was a private tour in a car which made it very pleasant. The driver was giving us information about every place we passed. We stopped at many places on route for a look around or refreshments. Nissan fort and the surrounding areas are interesting.
Very enjoyable day and highly recommend it.

There were 6 of us on this tour. Rasheed was our knowledgeable and gentlemanly guide. I have been to Oman many times but had not been to some of the places where there were old ruins. The highlights were Bahla Fort, which l had waited 20 years to see on opening after restoration, and Jabreen Castle, as we had time to see both, as well as Nizwa fort and Tanuf ruins. A great bunch of people, from US, Australia and UK and all interested in history. Recommended.
