What You Can Expect

1 Day trip to Hells Gate and Lake Naivasha From Nairobi

boat ride in the Lake

Begin with 7am pickup in Nairobi, then travel to Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park, with a break to get views of the Great Rift Valley from a scenic overlook along the way. Upon arriving in the park at roughly 9am, begin a 2-hour, guided bike tour: watch for herds of Thompson’s gazelle, eland, zebra, and hartebeest as you ride. Keep an eye on the sky throughout the tour, as Hell’s Gate National Park is home to more than 100 species of birds, including Verreaux’s eagles, augur buzzards, vulture, and swifts.

Continue on foot into the park’s distinctive gorges, where narrow passageways and caves are sunk into sedimentary rock. After a 1-hour walk, stop by a local Maasai community to learn about traditional life and customs in the Great Rift Valley, then head to Naivasha Fisherman’s camp for lunch (own expense).

For an additional fee of $20 per person, you can explore Lake Naivasha wildlife on a 1-hour boat tour. Spot the hippos that linger just at the surface of the water, and see some of the diverse birdlife; African fish eagles, lesser flamingos, African spoonbill, and little grebe are all common here. At 4pm, begin the return trip to Nairobi, and finish the day with drop-off in Nairobi at roughly 6pm.

George was an amazing tour guide--friendly, fun, full of information, and always ready with a good joke. The bike ride through the park was beautiful, easy, and relaxed. There was plenty of time for photos or to just stop, take a few deep breaths, and admire the view, which presents new surprises every few minutes. I don't think I'd want to do a safari in any other way now. The gorge took a bit of effort here and there, but it was well worth a few beads of sweat. And there were only a few. The Fisherman's Camp lunch was tasty, the location relaxing, and the boat trip is a must.

It was an incredible day, and I would heartily recommend booking this trip with George and his crew. He could charge twice and much, and you'd still be getting a great deal.

If you have a day in Nairobi and would like to enjoy the great outdoors and get some exercise then this is definitely the right trip to choose. We were picked up by Alex at 7 am and drove to the Great Rift Valley. The escarpment down to the valley is an experience in itself with all the traffic but wonderful views over the valley. 7km cycling in Hells Gate Park to reach the gorge with a wide range of animals on the way. The walk in the gorge includes some climbs but is really worth the effort. Lunch at the Fishermans Restaurant is wholesome and the view over the lake is magnificent! We also thoroughly enjoyed the boat trip as we came up close with various groups of hippos, watched the African Fish Eagle swoop down for its prey, and saw the pelicans take off right next to the boat. A very nice day which we will remember for a long time. Thanks also to Alex!

We had an amazing day! George picked us up at our apartment in Nairobi which made things a lot easier for us - we really appreciated that. Our drive to Hell's Gate National Park was good - George was very knowledge, I think we learned some interesting things about Kenya. I haven't done a biking safari before - loved it! Easy pace, no problem to stop and take lots of pictures. The gorge hike was different then we expected - but we loved it. Lots of climbing and finding you way along the sides and floor of the gorge. Great lunch at Fisherman's camp overlooking Lake Naivasha. The boat ride was awesome - wonderful picture opportunities to see lots of birds and hippos. Really enjoyed that part - well worth the 20 USD for the boat ride.

What a wonderful introduction to Kenya. George was amazing and very knowledgeable. I will admit I am not the fittest of people, but bike riding through the national park amongst zebra, giraffe, and baboons was one of the best experiences I have ever had. At one stage we were that close to the giraffes you could almost reach out and touch them. The walk through hells gate was breathtaking. We had lunch with a view of the lake, before getting into a boat to explore the bird life and find a hippo or two. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone who wants to get out of the city for the day. Thank you George for a brilliant day

Absolutely Amazing. George is definitely a character and this is one of the best day trips that I've been on in any country! The animals, the scenery, throw in some rock climbing, bicycle and boat ride, you have yourself a good day out. It is quite a long day though, so be prepared for that.

This was a great trip. George and his team were fantastic with the guide being very knowledgeable, taking time to point out great views over the Rift Valley on the way down to hell's gate. Inside the bike ride was the highlight of the day with so much wildlife right besides you as you cycle past!

The boat trip was a lot of fun too with your own private boat ride being organized and the guide getting one of the Eagles to swoop down into the water and catch some fish.

Overall a fantastic day out and would thoroughly recommend booking up if you re looking for a full on and fun do trip while staying in Nairobi!

This tour was great and great value for money. George drove along for the first two hours and was both informative and talkative and knew a lot about the area and history. Not all they other guides for the various spots talked as much, but were all very friendly and responded to all questions. The trip was well planned and executed and a great experience all in all. Highly recommended!

I had one day to explore Nairobi and its surroundings before my business meetings started. Since I prefer to get out of the cities and see the countryside of places I visit, I opted for something else than Nairobi National Park. It turned out that the day trip to Hells Gate National Park and Lake Naivasha was everything I could wish for and more! Awesome!

My guide George was knowledgeable, funny and drove me safely around all day. After a couple hours drive incl. a viewpoint stop, we arrived at Hells Gate. This is the only park in Kenya where people are allowed to walk and bike inside the park, as there are no dangerous animals present.

Park guide Brian and I biked in the beautiful park for a few hours and we even saw a leopard crossing the road ahead of us! Apparently this is a very rare sighting even for guide Brian, and he proudly told everyone about it. We saw lots of other wild animals along the route as well. We also hiked in the Hells Gate Gorge for an hour. The spectacular river gorge was breathtaking.

From Hells Gate, the trip continued to a wonderful lunch spot by Lake Naivasha. Afterwards, I spent an hour in a lake boat with guide Edward, who could tell me all about the various birds and animals in and around the lake. We viewed some hippos from a distance, which was fine with me as they are scary animals. It was lovely being out on the water in the open boat.

I loved being outside and active instead of sitting in a car all day. If you are like me, dont hesitate to book this trip and you will have a great experience with George and the crew! BTW make sure you dress comfortably for a sometimes sweaty bike ride - it gets dusty and warm :

Also - keep Georges card in case you need a driver for something one of the other days you are in Nairobi. He fixes everything!
