What You Can Expect

Hell's Gate National Park Private Bike Tour from Nairobi

boat ride in the Lake

Begin with 7am pickup in Nairobi, then travel to Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park, with a break to get views of the Great Rift Valley from a scenic overlook along the way. Upon arriving in the park at roughly 9am, begin a 2-hour, guided bike tour: watch for herds of Thompson’s gazelle, eland, zebra, and hartebeest as you ride. Keep an eye on the sky throughout the tour, as Hell’s Gate National Park is home to more than 100 species of birds, including Verreaux’s eagles, augur buzzards, vulture, and swifts.

Continue on foot into the park’s distinctive gorges, where narrow passageways and caves are sunk into sedimentary rock. After a 1-hour walk, stop by a local Maasai community to learn about traditional life and customs in the Great Rift Valley, then head to Naivasha Fisherman’s camp for lunch (own expense).

For an additional fee of $20 per person, you can explore Lake Naivasha wildlife on a 1-hour boat tour. Spot the hippos that linger just at the surface of the water, and see some of the diverse birdlife; African fish eagles, lesser flamingos, African spoonbill, and little grebe are all common here. At 4pm, begin the return trip to Nairobi, and finish the day with drop-off in Nairobi at roughly 6pm.

We had a wonderful day trip from Nairobi to Hell's Gate and the Lake Naivasha area the first week of March. The driver/guide Sammy picked us up on time and was very good. We are a family of 4 with two teenage kids. All of us loved the trip--it was one of the best things we did in Kenya. We had panoramic views of the Rift Valley, then drove through it, and then the park and lake are interesting and beautiful. Sammy made sure we met our Maasai guide in the park. That guide was also great and had gotten bikes for us. We saw lots of animals--and being on bikes makes it for us a more rewarding and very different experience than being in the van/truck. All of us loved the hike in the canyon--our kids really felt is was an adventure. It has the right combination of beautiful natural features and interesting volcanic/geologic information and having the guide with you makes it really stress free. Afterward we went to a super relaxing but good quality restaurant with large terrace with lake views that was perfect after the hike. I would recommend without qualifications Sammy and Perfect Wilderness Safaris.

My guide was excellent he really put all out there to make us have a great experience! Without a doubt recommend it! Its worth the travel. The feeedom of biking and seeing the Animals up closes plus the natural landscape was increíble

The vehicle was a bit old and not much luxury but I guess is part of the experience.

This tour was led by Paul from Perfect Wilderness Tours and Safaris. Paul was very informative and chatty, and had loads of excellent insight regarding tourism in Kenya. He was immediately accommodating when I asked if I could stay in the car instead of ride the bicycles because my primary interest is birds, and cycling with my camera can be quite difficult. Paul also arranged a separate Masai guide who knows more about birds than he did, so that my experience would be top-notch. The drive through Hell's Gate was excellent, and the hike in the gorge was also a highlight. My only small criticism is that I was not expecting to have to pay more than 20 for the optional boat ride on Lake Naivasha as a solo passenger. Overall excellent tour, and I was very pleased that skipping the bicycles was a viable option.

This was the perfect day trip from Nairobi. Alex was a phenomenal guide, knowledgeable and friendly. Picked me up from my hotel on time and had everything planned out.

Biking is definitely the best way to see Hell's Gate - I saw giraffe, zebra, and many other animals up close.

We had an excellent experience with our tour. We booked very last minute, about 24 hours before departure. Perfect Wilderness Tours and Safaris was the operator. They quickly contacted us to confirm details, and collected us promptly from our Nairobi hotel. It was only my wife and I - so no large group at all. Smooth transport there and back, excellent Masai guide Brian for the chilled bike ride and short hike through the national park. Lunch and optional boat ride at Naivasha - I recommend taking the boat ride - about 1 hour, very relaxed, lots of hippos and birds. Would recommend this to anyone who wants an easy day trip from Nairobi, limited time to research, with a professional operator, and see a national park and ride through it rather than just sitting in a safari truck. Highly recommended.

The tour was great!! It was very physically consuming, we didn't finish the Lake Naivasha tour because we fell asleep after lunch due mostly to jet lag.
Shadrak our tour guide was awesome. We were the only ones in the tour and he made sure to accommodate some of our special requests. I was also impressed by how careful he was as a driver. I would use him again.

I had only one day in Kenya long layover and this was the perfect tour to make the most out of my limited time. Paul was an excellent tour guide. He let me know that everything would move at my pace, and gave me all the information up front so that I could decide what extras I wanted to add/pass on. First you stop and get a nice scenic view at the top of a mountain, perfect for taking pictures and a little shop to buy souvenirs from. Then down to start the bike ride through Hell's Gate National Park... You are given the option of paying an extra 20 to be picked up at the end of the biking/hiking, plan on doing that! lol, Biking on a dirt road then hiking through the gorge is one heck of a work out, you will want to get a ride back. After that we went to Lake Naivasha, this was amazing! I was able to see a lot of animals in Hell's Gate, but seeing the hippos at the lake really was amazing. I was not impressed with the food served at the lake, I would ask to eat somewhere else if I had a second time around. If you have a limited amount of time, or are not interested in the week long safari, this tour is a great choice! You wont be disappointed.

Tips:
Wear good hiking/walking shoes and comfortable clothes
Bring water and snacks!!!
Bring cash for the numerous gift shops and extras you may want to partake in throughout the day

This was a really fantastic way to get out of Nairobi for the day and see some gorgeous sights and wildlife. It's a full day, but not so long it's not manageable. Definitely pack lots of water and get ready to be pretty physical. Between the bike rides and the hiking/climbing, you'll be feeling it later, especially if you are over 30: Shadrack was a wonderful and kind guide, super fun to hang out with. Would highly recommend.
