What You Can Expect

Volunteer Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary From Nairobi

Volunteer Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary

This volunteer experience begins with pickup at the Nairobi airport and transfer to a Nairobi hotel, where you’ll spend your first night before traveling to the Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary. Continue to southern Kenya on public transport with a wildlife sanctuary escort, then board a project vehicle for the final trip to camp.

All meals and accommodations are provided for throughout your time at the wildlife sanctuary, so you can focus on working alongside local experts and community members. Visit the Giraffe Center and the Sheldrick Baby Elephant Orphanage on your sanctuary orientation. Stand watch at a water hole to count the wildlife that come to drink, then look for signs of poaching activity throughout the reserve. In addition to a thriving population of elephants, the reserve is home to lions, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, wild dogs, warthogs, hyenas, and buffaloes.

Disarm the wire snares and traps that poachers set across animal tracks, and help maintain the sanctuary optimal wildlife habitat by planting trees and improving roads. Help with the water projects that the sanctuary conducts for local people and wildlife, then meet with a wildlife expert to learn about the challenges of human wildlife conflict in the area.

At the end of your time at Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary, make the return trip to Nairobi for a final night in a local hotel and drop-off at the Nairobi airport.
