Naples Above and Underground Archaeology Walking Tour

Learn about the history of Naples underground ruins

After meeting your guide in the morning at the Gesù Nuovo in the historical center of this pulsating, dynamic city, traverse the narrow streets on a quest to discover what lies beneath the city of Naples.

First founded by the Greeks, Naples comes from the word ‘New Polis, or ‘New City.’ So there is a lot of history to be uncovered. Once at the the Duomo di San Gennaro, the city’s gorgeous cathedral, head inside and descend below the city.

Get wowed by the ancient sites that exist below the cathedral, including a a paved road that was built during the Greek era. Learn from your art historian guide about the history of it and also learn about the Baroque church you’re standing in.

Once on the surface again, stroll the streets taking in the bustling ambience of one of Europe’s most unique urban environments. Walk down the famed Via dei Tribunali, originally a Greek and Roman road many centuries ago.

When you arrive at the church of San Lorenzo Maggiore, descend below the gothic church where you’ll find an ancient Greek and Roman agora, or public square, that goes back about 2,300 years. Take some time to explore the place and the existing ancient structures, learning all in the intriguing details from your guide.

When the time comes, head back to the church of Gesù Nuovo where the tour finishes.

This was a very interesting walk and we learned lots of fascinating things about Naples that we would never have spotted otherwise. Our guide spoke excellent English and her knowledge of the art and history of her native city was extensive. We were slightly disappointed not to spend more time underground - that part of the tour was much shorter than we expected.

Excellent - very informed, enthusiastic guide we enjoyed every moment and that is why we have booked our third VIATOR only a few days ago for the 4 of us again - this time in Poland so we are expecting the same incredible standard that we have encountered in Italy..

Roberta was very knowledgeable and excited about showing her city! We ran into a problem with a funeral at the church in which we were supposed to have an underground tour which was unfortunate.

1 star rating: I do not recommend this June 2016

It was overpriced.
The guide was helpful and interesting, though.
This tour is something you can do on your own without having to pay so much money which did not include entrance fee.
