What You Can Expect

Private Tour: Pompeii Tour with Family Tour Option

Explore ancient Pompeii on a private standard or family tour by rail from Sorrento

On August 24 in the year 79 AD, nearly 2,000 years ago, the volcano Mt. Vesuvius began erupting. It blanked the nearby town of Pompeii, freezing the 20,000 denizens with its ash and molten lava, thus perfectly preserving this ancient Roman city. With this 2-hour guided walking tour, you can see the best that the archaeological site has to offer.

Meet your guide at the entrance and prepare to be dazzled by this UNESCO World Heritage site. If there’s something in particular you’d like to see, tell your guide so he or she can tailor the tour to your liking. If not, there’s plenty of things to be wowed by.

See the city walls and the Porta Marina gate that was once the entryway to the harbor of Pompeii. Explore the ancient theater where performances were regularly given. Gawk at what once was a Roman version of a ‘fast food’ restaurant, where vast vases still stand that were used for storing food. Stop at the Forum and learn about the political system in Pompeii and what the Forum was used for. Walk down the basalt-laden streets and squares of the city.

See the blocks that provided stepping-stones across the often-flooded and sewage-filled streets; and view must-sees such as the Temple of Apollo, the Macellum market, and the public weighing scales.

And, intriguingly, see the casts of victims who were immediately frozen by the volcanic eruption. Stop by the thermal baths, a popular pastime in ancient Roman times. And even visit an old brothel, also a much-enjoyed proclivity among Roman men.

Your 2-hour tour ends at the original starting point, when you say goodbye to your guide.

Family Tour:
Have kids in tow? Opt for the family tour, which will intrigue children, thanks to games, puzzles and a map designed specifically for children. Your guide will also tailor the route in a way that is geared for the youngsters. It’s a truly engaging way for them to discover the city and learn about life here long ago. After two hours, the family tour ends at the starting point when you bid farewell to your guide.

The two hours tour is highly recommended. Our guide Fabrizio was very knowledgable and helpful. He first found out our plan of the day and helped us plan the route of tour in the ruin. He then recommended a few places for us to roam around in our leisure time. He said the best time to travel Pompeii is winter because of less people. During peak season you will have to queue up for 30 minutes just to get in to see the famous brothel!

This private tour of Pompeii was very informative and flexible. Knowing that part of our family had visited Pompeii 2 years ago and that this was a first visit for the others, our guide Hilaria customized our visit. The first timers got to see the important sites and Hilaria added some new sites to hold the repeat visitors' interest. Questions were encouraged and answered in excellent English. Excellent tour!

Amazing!! This tour was excellent and Giuseppe tour guide was a well-informed, friendly and fun tour guide. Our 9-year old is very curious and extremely interested in history, the tour was perfect for him. He even said so afterward. The fact that we were on our own with Giuseppe allowed our son to ask questions and really engage with him in the tour Giuseppe had a special map and figures for our son. While the tour was suited for a 9-year old it was still informative and interesting for us as adults Pompeii is an incredible place and this tour really made it come to life for us and our son.

Coming from Australia we spent nearly two weeks in Italy and took lots of tours. Fabrizio's tour of Pompeii was the kids absolutely favourite tour by far. He was able to perfectly pitch his tour to my 8, 11, and 14 so that it was entertaining and informative. The educational games he made up were such fun that my son wanted to know where he could buy Fabrizio's card game! I wish we could have had Fabrizio lead all our tours as we went on a kids tour of the colosseum with another company which seemed to be a normal tour with some free pens and head wreaths thrown in for the kids. I would and do thoroughly recommend booking a tour of Pompeii with this amazing tour guide. 10/10

Lavina made this tour perfect. The interactive map and games kept both of my kids involved. They are 3 and 7. Even though it was a family tour, my husband and I learned more than we ever imagined. I would recommend this tour to EVERYONE! Thank you Lavina for a day will will never forget!

Our tour guide, Fabrizio Belleni, brought Pompeii alive with his extensive knowledge. My family began the tour knowing very little but after spending two hours on a private tour with Fabrizio, we left knowing more then we could have read in any book. He also kept our children's attention with the fun games and riddles he played throughout the morning. We definitely lucked out getting Fabrizio as our guide!

Our private tour of Pompeii was PHENOMENAL !!! Our tour guide, Fabrizio Belleni, from was so knowledgable, friendly and patient. My wife and I are slow walkers and he totally let us choose the pace. We have a 15 yr old son who Fabrizio was able to engage as easily as he engaged us. Our son said he felt like it was a constant conversation about what we were seeing, rather than a lecture Bout it. He was able to answer just about every question we had and we couldn't have been any more satisfied with the tour. It is a little bit more for a private tour, but so incredibly worth it, especially if Fabrizio is your guide !

Giuseppe was an excellent tour guide. He was extremely knowledgeable, and made the area "come alive" for our multigenerational family group. Without a guide it would have been difficult to appreciate all of the aspects in this large archeological site. Thanks for make it so interesting, Giuseppe!
