What You Can Expect

Rhodes Hall Horseback-Riding Tour with Snorkeling

Snorkel in crystal clear water surrounded by tropical fish!

Following pickup in the morning from your Negril hotel, climb aboard a comfortable minivan and travel north along the coastal road to the Rhodes Hall Plantation.

When you arrive at the 500-acre (202-hectare) estate, look for the seventy horses that roam freely on the estate's grounds. Meet your expert horseback riding guides and listen to a short safety briefing and orientation. No experience is necessary to participate in this 2-hour ride; your guides will match you with a horse that matches your experience level.

Mount your trusty steed and ride past grand plantation homes along the beach. Listen as your guides talk about Jamaican history and the ecology of the area's natural surroundings while you ride deep into the tropical forest. Look for the abundant plant and animal life that calls the dense jungle home. Listen for the distinctive calls of herons, sandpipers, parrots and peacocks. After the trail takes you through stands of ancient bamboo, you'll emerge to fantastic views of Negril below you. Then enter the mangrove swamps, a favorite habitat for the island's crocodiles; keep a keen eye out for nostrils atop a slender snout.

After your horseback ride through the steamy jungle, head to Half Moon Bay to cool off. Climb into a zippy motorboat that takes you out to the calm area protected by the coral reef, then don your snorkel equipment and jump in. As you float in the shallow, calm waters for approximately 45 minutes, look for starfish, eels, Caribbean lobsters and sea urchins.

Your 3-hour morning experiencing Jamaica's natural surroundings ends with drop-off back at your Negril hotel.

I really enjoyed the part where we swam with the horses. This was a wonderful experience. The part of the tour through the old plantation wasn and #39;t interesting. There wasn and #39;t enough left to make it interesting. din and #39;t bother with the snorkelling - it was poorly organized and not a good spot to snorkle.

I've been horseback riding around the world, in many different countries, but this was definitely an interesting experience. I have mixed feelings, because while they let me canter/gallop the horse, they also encouraged me to canter him back towards home. They used only a D-ring snaffle bit, on a horse that definitely wanted to go home. I thought perhaps since they encouraged me to gallop him back home, perhaps they knew something I didn't. Instead, I had to do an emergency stop with the horse, which failed due to the horse grabbing the bit and pushing through his head literally being twisted to the right. We ended up slamming into a group of riders.

I didn't fall off, due to 15 years of riding experience, but if they're going to allow people to gallop horses TOWARDS home, perhaps a curb chain would help? The horse was easily controlled otherwise, listening to half halts when we were simply cantering away from the group, so it was just an issue with being told to gallop towards the barn.

Also, they don't include water on a very hot ride, which was kind of disappointing. They don't provide a way for you to bring it either.

2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better August 2015

The web write up was not accurate. It stated a 9AM start time and expect 3 hours. I called to set up a pickup time, thinking it would be before 9 AM. That was the p/u time. We got to the ranch at 9:30 4 in our group and was told they were preparing the horses. Well, after 50 minutes of waiting and after asking how long it would be, the tour finally started. The tour was nice, but the horses were a little rowdy though. Finished around noon. We expected 3 hours and had plans for the afternoon so we did not do the snorkel portion of the tour. Another driver was willing to take us back to our hotel. Disappointed that things took so long and not as we expected by the write up. Also, had to ask about footwear since it did not specify. Wear water shoes or sneakers that can get wet.
