2-Day Amritsar and Golden Temple Tour From Delhi

2-Day Amritsar and Golden Temple Tour From Delhi

Enjoy two days of guided exploration on this Amritsar and Golden Temple Tour from Delhi. Your friendly and professional English-speaking guide will collect you from your Delhi hotel and transport you in air-conditioned comfort to the magical city known for its Punjabi culture and Sikh religious history. Get a behind the scenes look at the architecture, ceremonies and religious landmarks as you explore the Ram Bagh Gardens, make your way to the Wagah border and take in the beauty of the famed Golden Temple.

Day 1: Delhi – Amritsar
After early morning pickup from your New Delhi hotel, transfer to the railway station to catch a train for Amritsar. During the approximate 6-hour ride, enjoy complimentary breakfast aboard the train. (It is recommended that you also bring snacks along to fortify your trip.) Upon arrival in Amritsar around 1:30pm, you’ll be met by a driver and transported to your accommodation, where you can rest and relax before your afternoon tour begins.

When your professional guide picks you up, settle into your comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle and enjoy complimentary bottled water during the drive to the Wagah border. Here, watch the lowering of the flags ceremony, which takes place each evening before sunset. Also referred to as the ‘Beating Retreat border ceremony on the international level,’ this daily military ritual has been practiced by both India and Pakistan – the Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers – since 1959.

Witness the brash parade of soldiers from both sides of the Wagah border, which once served as the only road linking the two countries. Watch as the infantrymen stand at attention and the border’s iron gates are opened as the two nations’ flags are lowered in perfect unison with the setting sun. The spectacle ends with the folding of flags, followed by a curt handshake between opposing soldiers and the closing of the gates.

Your guide will offer insight about the carefully choreographed ceremony before heading to the Golden Temple, considered the Sikhs’ spiritual and cultural center. Amritsar, meaning ‘pool of nectar,’ was founded in 1579 by Guru Ram Das – the fourth Guru of the Sikh religion. Learn about his son and the next Sikh guru, Arjun Dev, who built the famous and important shrine.

At the Golden Temple, set amid a pool of holy water, visitors and devotees from all faiths are welcome. You'll get a glimpse of the Sikh temple tradition of offering daily Guru-Ka-Langar – a free, community meal that began in the 16th century. As you watch the community kitchen feed up to 10,000 people, learn about this Sikh principle of equality and the practice of eating together. After your visit, your guide will return you to your hotel.

Overnight: Amritsar Country Inn and Suites in Amritsar

Day 2: Amritsar – Delhi (B)
After breakfast at your hotel, embark on a sightseeing tour of the old city of Amritsar with your guide. Begin with a morning visit to Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden within the city and the site of a notorious massacre of Indians under British rule in 1919.

See the memorial that commemorates hundreds of pilgrims who gathered for a Punjabi New Year festival and were killed under the orders of General Dyer, the British lieutenant governor of the Punjab, who had banned all meetings and demonstrations in the province. Amid today’s pleasant park atmosphere, learn more about the tragedy of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre and the Indian freedom struggle that ensued.

Next, visit the beautiful Ram Bagh Gardens and the remains of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s summer palace – now a national museum. Hear from your guide how the former Raja of Punjab named the garden in honor of his devotion to Guru Ram Das. Admire the statue of the legendary Raja upon his horse and marvel at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panorama, a three-dimensional mural that depicts the important life events of the legendary Sikh king.

In the evening, your guide will transport you back to the railway station to board your train for Delhi. During the approximate 6-hour return, enjoy complimentary dinner aboard the train. Upon arrival, a driver will transfer you to your hotel or the airport.

The Golden Temple is a MUST GO for a spiritual connection, even if you aren't Sikh. Seeing The Book and seeing this temple at night under the moon is majestic, as is touring the free kitchen. We even got to make roti with the locals! Harry, our guide, was knowledgeable and outgoing - definitely a fabulous tour guide.

Out of all the tours we booked for our Southeast Asia adventure, this one was the most organized and followed the itinerary pretty well. Transport to the train was easy, and our contact even walked us onto the train to the right place before leaving us. Finding our next contact in Amritsar, nearly seven hours later, was also easy - a sign for Sita, the company, in hand. He explained our itinerary, and then we met Harry.

Harry took us to the border ceremony, which was so wonderful. It's SUPER HOT in June, so be careful of exhaustion, but as a foreigner, you have your own designated section near the action. Then, of course, was the Golden Temple - everything I didn't know I loved about people, the world, and god.

This tour was fascinating and lovely. The guide and driver were professional and wonderful to spend time with. Our driver was very skilled and pleasant. Our guide took very good care of us. He was especially interesting and knowledgeable. On a two day tour, a good guide is most important, and we had an excellent one. The tour is remarkable. One point to add, there was a wrinkle in the booking so be attentive to that. Highly recommend this most wonderful tour.

Excellent tour!
Value for money.
We were well looked after. Timely transfer from hotel to the railway station, met by the local tour representative Sita Travels. good and comfortable train journey to Amritsar. Met by the representative on the other side and transferred to the hotel . Good guide service for the tour and then timely return back to train and to the hotel even though the train reached quite late 11 pm back to Delhi
Thoroughly recommend

Everyone should put this site on their itinerary. The temple is awesome. But moreso the fact that the Sihks prepare 10 -50K meals a day for the poor and give them free selter. Volunteers often wait 3 mos. to serve the needy. Religion/people at its best. Worth the long train trip.

We loved our tour! The Wagah Border flag ceremony was very entertaining (although there was a recent suicide bomber attack on 11/2/14 that killed 60 people on the Pakistan side, I'm not too sure how safe it is any longer). The Golden Temple was beautiful...especially at night, and our guide was very kind and knowledgeable.

The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is that there was some confusion about our return pick-up from the train station. Our train was delayed about 40 minutes, and we arrived back in Delhi around 11:45pm. Not sure what happened, but we waited about 15-20 minutes and nobody showed up, so we wound up getting a taxi. The company apologized for the mishap and made it up by sending a car to take us to dinner the next day, and also a ride to the airport.

All in all, the tour was great, and I would definitely recommend it!

Very good. All went well most of the time. The sights were amazing and our guide was very informative. Getting started was a bit rocky. the organisers were looking for information that we thought we'd already given. And there was some confusion as to how long we could use the hotel room at the end of the trip prior to catching the train..
