Make your way to your morning or afternoon swamp adventure in Slidell, Louisiana. Here, find Honey Island Swamp, a wildlife preserve that is one of the last protected wetlands in Louisiana. Board the custom‐made, open‐air boat and set off on an educational ride. Holding a max of 22 passengers, this boat offers a more intimate experience as your group quietly winds through narrow swamp passages and gets you closer to native wildlife.

Your expert guide’s commentary makes this an unforgettable wildlife‐spotting expedition through myth‐laden Louisiana terrain. Glide along the water, viewing the lush greenery and abundance of wild animals, including alligators, owls, raccoons, snakes, black bears, bald eagles, and wild boar. True animal enthusiasts will love getting an up‐close (and interactive) look at some of the ‘friendlier’ animals. Get great photos and learn more about the famous regional alligator, who can tip the scales at 1,000 pounds (453 kg). Also learn about the culture and ingenuity of the Cajun people who have—for more than two centuries—inhabited this area and used it as a source of food and medicine. Your guide takes you by a secluded Cajun village that can only be accessed by boat. Throughout the ride, hear stories about the bayou lifestyle, as well as information about the region’s passionate wetland preservation efforts.

Your fun and enlightening boat tour returns to Slidell. This tour does not include transport to or from New Orleans.
Pass By:
Lake Pontchartrain
From New Orleans, take a short drive to Slidell and you'll reach Lake Pontchartrain and the Honey Island Swamp, a wildlife preserve that is one of the last protected wetlands in Louisiana.
Stop At:
Honey Island Swamp
Your guide welcomes you aboard a custom-made 22-passenger flat-bottom boat. The smaller sized, quiet boat can fit through narrow passages in the swamp foliage so that you see more and get closer to wildlife. It’s the ideal way to take in the lush environment of Cajun country. As your guide explains the history of Louisiana’s wetlands and swamp ecosystem, be on the lookout for resident wildlife including alligators, raccoons, owls, wild boar, nutria, snakes, turtles, black bears, bald eagles and many other bird species. Get a close look at some wild gators as your guide shares facts about the toothy beasts, who can weigh up to 1,000 pounds (453 kg). Their ancestors once roamed the earth with the dinosaurs and scientists estimate that they have existed for more than 150 million years. Glide safely through the fertile swamplands, learning about Cajun culture and how local people have utilized the swamp for food, homes, and medicine from your guide. You even see an authentic Cajun village that is only accessible by boat. Gain an understanding of why the wetlands are slowly disappearing and about the efforts being made to preserve Louisiana's natural treasures. After a fascinating 2-hour boat tour on Honey Island Swamp, your guide returns you to shore. You can then make your own way to your next destination.

Great Family Experience

It was easy to book the tour through Viator and even easier to switch my reservation with the company when our plans changed 24 hours before our planned tour. Cajun Encounters let us move our tour up a day with no issues. Our tour guide - Captain Emmett - was informative and funny. His facts stuck in my kids' minds and they're telling them to everyone they talk with. We highly recommend all families take this tour!

Great tour

Our operator Emmett was great, very knowledgeable with a keen eye and good humour. He did have to get strict with one oblivious passenger who even after being thoroughly warned attempted to pet a wild hog so his concern for our safety was also evident. Great tour, very informative, i would do this again.
Highly recommend!

Very good for the price. The gift shop and waiting area are very nice. Had Captain Tom and was pleased with his knowledge but had to ask about some things to get him started. Saw the wildlife but early March they still seemed to be sluggish.
