What You Can Expect

Swamp Boat Ride and Southern Plantation Tour from New Orleans

Swamp Boat

Your 5.5‐hour tour offers a morning or afternoon start time, when you’ll be picked up by an air‐conditioned coach in the French Quarter. Admire the scenery of the Lake Pontchartrain shoreline as you head first to Destrehan Plantation, the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi Valley. At the plantation, follow your costumed guide through the restored French Colonial style mansion. Hear stories of the Destrehan family sugar dynasty and the estate’s many former inhabitants before you explore the grounds, including vibrant gardens and the 1811 Slave Revolt Museum.

After your 1.5‐hour plantation tour, return north by coach to Lake Pontchartain and Manchac Swamp, where you’ll board an open‐sided, covered boat – good for touring during any season! This privately‐owned swamp is a great venue for uninterrupted wildlife spotting. Glide along the water, viewing the lush greenery and viewing (and maybe getting up close and personal) with abundant local wildlife, including alligators, egrets, raccoons, snakes and giant nutria. Get great up‐close photos and gain insight about local history and wetland preservation from your passionate native guides.

This tour returns you by coach to the French Quarter in the late‐afternoon or evening.

Sandy was a wealth of information during drive to each location. Jim clearly loves what he does, and provided excellent tour of the plantation. Tim the boat captain made the swamp tour fun. He pointed out all the various ways to clean, eat or sale swamp critters. Was worth the time! I encourage others to bring lunch a long, plenty of time for picnic.

Your was very good. The plantation tour was very informative. Enjoyed the swamp tour as well, considering that this is December and chilly for gators, we still had a good tour, including learning about wildlife in the swamp.

We had an amazing tour! Our guide, Brandon, was very knowledgeable not only of the area but of history and environmental issues in general. His was an almost unscripted narrative, open to questions and side topics, that was extremely interesting and educational. By the end of our swamp ride he had pulled out his pets to pass around - snakes, turtles, an alligator, etc... that he allowed us to hold and photograph. It was great! Highly recommend this tour.

Plantation tour w/ docents in period costumes was like taking a trip back in time. Our docent Frank was especially knowledgable. Followed up by a cruise through the swamp showed many of nature's beauties!
