Swamp Boat

Your 5.5‐hour tour offers a morning or afternoon start time, when you’ll be picked up by an air‐conditioned coach in the French Quarter. Admire the scenery of the Lake Pontchartrain shoreline as you head first to Destrehan Plantation, the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi Valley. At the plantation, follow your costumed guide through the restored French Colonial style mansion. Hear stories of the Destrehan family sugar dynasty and the estate’s many former inhabitants before you explore the grounds, including vibrant gardens and the 1811 Slave Revolt Museum.

After your 1.5‐hour plantation tour, return north by coach to Lake Pontchartain and Manchac Swamp, where you’ll board an open‐sided, covered boat – good for touring during any season! This privately‐owned swamp is a great venue for uninterrupted wildlife spotting. Glide along the water, viewing the lush greenery and with abundant local wildlife, including alligators, egrets, raccoons, snakes and giant nutria. Get great photos and gain insight about local history and wetland preservation from your passionate native guides.

This tour returns you by coach to the French Quarter in the late‐afternoon or evening.

Do not come to New Orleans without doing this tour. We got to hold a baby alligator, which was amazing!! And we got to learn amazing facts about about life here in the early period of time.

Our swamp boat ride was my favorite part of this tour. Brendan our captain/guide was very knowledgable about the swamp, it's creatures, it's history. He made the tour interesting by making it interactive. He shared his pets, a crawfish, several turtles, a couple of snakes and a baby alligator. While he passed each of these critters around he told us all about them. You could chose how up close and personal you wanted to be. We did see gators and turtles in the swamp also a clever blackbird and a raccoon.
The plantation tour was interesting. Our docent/guide was very informative about life on the plantation. It was a nice balance between tour and free time to explore the out buildings. I would highly recommend this tour.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and spoke to us about different aspects of NOLA as the bus took us to the plantation and out to the swamp. The plantation tour was good and we had enough time to see a good bit of history. On the boat of the swamp tour we saw raccoons and turtles and lots of alligators. Great way to spend the day !

The plantation was surreal, a great history lesson. So odd to think it was surrounded at one time with fuel storage. The swamp tour was incredible. We had a warm day in February so the alligators were literally floating up out of the mud to warm up, dozens of them on land in the water. Our boat captain brought his menagerie of pets on board so we were able to hold turtles, snake, crawfish and an alligator. Absolutely wonderful and hysterical. Would definitely recommend.

What a great experience! The tour was full of history and knowledge. The Plantation was beautiful and the swap was full of alligators, turtles and some raccoons. I highly recommend this tour for all ages. Our tour guide, can't remember his name and our bus driver were funny and enjoyable. The only thing missing was being infromed that food can be brought with us. It is a long tour and other than vending machines we didn't have anything to eat and were starving. Beer and wine were for sale at the swamp tour so that was a big plus. We had excellent weather and enjoyed every bit of our experience.
