What You Can Expect

Viator VIP: EmptyMet Tour at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Empty MET Tour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

On the morning of your tour, make your way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the eastern edge of Central Park. The Met ranks among the most prestigious museums in the world, among the likes of the British Museum, the Louvre and the Vatican Museums. Proof is in the numbers: Over six million visitors flock to the Met each year, making it the city’s most visited tourist attraction. And you’ll explore its galleries before the museum is open to the public.

Meet your guide — an employee of the Met — near the entrance and head directly inside. See highlights of the permanent collection such as the Egyptian Temple of Dendur, Tiffany glass and revered masterpieces by the Old Masters. Other notable works include Roman frescos, Greek statues and modern pieces. Throughout the tour, there will be time to snap photos of your favorite works.

After roughly 1.5 hours of in-depth commentary about the exhibits and the museum’s history, you can leave the museum — just try not to look too smug as you pass the long line of people waiting to get inside.

Want to see more? You can stick around to explore the Met on your own with the included EmptyMet ticket that not only gets you same day admission to the Met, but also the Met Breuer and the Met Cloisters.

Viator VIPs feature travel experiences not typically available to the general public — from behind-the-scenes access to private viewings and VIP service — at many of the world’s top attractions, often with no lines and no crowds. Viator VIP tours are not available from other 3rd-party online sellers.

This tour was worth every penny. Our guide was amazing and to be able to see so much in 90 minutes was truly extraordinary. With over 2 million square feet it can be daunting but by seeing highlights we knew where we wanted to go back and spend more time. Take a few minutes for tea/coffee and look out at the beautiful views of Central Park. The David Hockney and Michelangelo special exhibits just added to the experience.

If you're an art lover, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a must-visit attraction for you when you visit NYC, of course. If, upon your return, you want to experience the space and its amazing collection in a special way, definitely take the EmptyMet tour. The tour also serves as a great introduction to the important American museum for a first-time visitor. We we led through the space--whizzing through department after department--by a Columbia University professor of education, whose extensive knowledge of The Met's galleries and holdings is enthusiastically shared throughout the tour. She has an infectious passion for the museum, its history, and its future. Once the tour concludes, guests are able to then direct themselves to the areas that most interest them for the rest of their stay. We highly recommend starting your sightseeing early guests must report to the museum by 8:30 a.m. and take the tour!

The purpose for my visit to NYC was to visit the MET. This was the greatest introduction I could imagine. We saw many galleries and the quality being shown. The tour gave me a good feel for how to get around on my own and see so much I had dreamed of seeing. It also introduced me to the Michael Rockefeller Oceanic Gallery. A surprise to me. The guide was gracious and very informative. Experiencing the crowds later in days ahead, views from across the room are treasured and it is an experience that will be remembered a lifetime.

My sister a New York City resident and I did the Empty Met Tour. We've both been to the Met before and this was an outstanding 90-minute opportunity. Our guide Dr. Page, I think had wide-ranging knowledge about art and the museum. She was articulate, informative, and funny. It was a joy to have clear views of remarkable art and architecture. I would have loved another hour or two. Recommended with out reservation and please use coat check as walking is at a brisk pace and being lightly dressed and burdened was good. Thank you, Dr. Page and helpful security staff!

This tour was the highlight of my visit to New York. If you love art but find the crowds, the lines, and the crying children overwhelming....this is the tour for you. We went on a holiday weekend. Our tour was especially quiet 12 people as it was a Sunday morning, so there wasnt even a cleaning or maintenance crew working. It was so valuable to have a docent that works at the museum. Her knowledge went well beyond just the artwork as she also touched on the history of the Met itself and how some acquisitions were made. Truly a very unique experience.
