Small Group Walking Tour of New York City Architecture

New York City Architecture

On this small group (6 people max) exploration of Midtown Manhattan, you will delve into the evolution of the city’s architecture, from the late 19th century through today. Starting in Tudor City at 2nd Avenue, proceed down 42nd Street to Times Square in the company of an architecture expert and long term New York resident. You'll discuss the varied roles the street has played in the last two centuries, from a gated community and commuter hub, to the red light and theater districts. Learn the visual language of such architectural movements as Beaux Arts, Art Deco, and the International Style as we study the exteriors and interiors of iconic structures like the Chrysler Building, the Daily News Building, the Ford Foundation, Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library. Along the way, discuss the city’s rapid expansion northward during the first half of the 20th century, the key role Midtown played in this, and how Manhattan’s built environment continues to evolve today. Since our group is small, there is plenty of time for questions and dialogue throughout the tour.

We totally enjoyed our architecture tour. The tour guide was extremely knowledgable. He compared the various different types of architecture throughout the city so that we could practically see the years roll by as the city changed. The fact that he had to deal with hordes of people passing around us and the noise of the traffic and still be heard and understood was remarkable. He always found a spot to stop so that we were out of the crowds while he was discribing a particular design or an interesting fact. I grew up in New York City and was back for a visit. I certainly learned a great deal about the city I thought I knew. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone, tourist or native New Yorker. Thank you.

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the architectural history of NYC. The tour route was wonderful the only disappointment was my mom not seeing her favorite building - the Seagram building.

I urge everyone to take this tour. Matico Josephson devised this tour himself. In less than I mile he showed us wonderful buildings and explained how New York had grown as a city.
The group was small, Matico was very expert. It was like going for a walk with a knowledgeable friend.
