What You Can Expect

Honolulu Food Tour: Eat Like a Local

Loco moco can be found in various forms on many Pacific islands from Hawaii to Samoa to Guam and Saipan, and is also popular in Japan

Find your way to the tour's meeting point in central Honolulu to meet your native guide and small group of twelve people or less. Listen to a short introduction to traditional Hawaiian food and get to know your group as you dig in to your first dish. Your local guide is a food-loving native who will show you the best places to eat in Ala Moana, far off the beaten path.

During the course of your 2.5-hour walking tour, cover about 1.5 miles (2.5 km) and stop at up to seven locally-owned and operated establishments. As you walk, your guide will share cultural and historic commentary about Ala Moana, one of the most populous neighborhoods in Honolulu.

The menu is subject to change, but you may sample such traditional Hawaiian delicacies as garlic shrimp, Hawaiian BBQ baby back ribs, takoyaki (Japanese dumplings), SPAM sushi, ube pancakes, loco moco and the ubiquitous shave ice.

At the conclusion of the tour, return to your original meeting spot with a full belly and lots of ideas of where to eat during the rest of your time in Honolulu.

Please note: This is a sample itinerary, and the dishes are subject to change due to availability without notice. If you have any food allergies or special requests, please note them at the time of checkout in the 'special requirements' field.

Ryan was great. We walked to the initial meeting spot from our hotel on Waikiki Beach about 45 mins. All the restaurants were within comfortable walking distance. The food was excellent, and Ryan was a great guide. A tour like this is a very worthwhile use of an afternoon while in a different country/city to get away from the tourist eateries and experience the food locals eat. Can't recommend enough.

Fantastic tour - places we might not have found on our own, and a great intro to Hawaiian cuisine and the many influences. Our guide Ryan was great - we would definitely recommend this tour.

If you want to eat like a local - I would recommend this tour. Our guide, Ryan, was very informative and provided us with some of the history of the food that we were eating. I tried everything and liked most things. I would recommend this tour for those foodies who are open minded and adventurous in their food tastes. A great way to visit some eating establishments that most tourists would not go to or know about.

The Eat Like a Local Hawaii Food Tour lived up to its name, as all of the places he took us were places no tourists ever would have wandered into on their own. In fact most were little local dives and food courts with delicious Asian-inspired food. However all of them were places I’d come back to in a heartbeat. This is the real side of Hawaii that few people get to experience. Far, far away from the touristy luaus and sunset dinner cruises. This is the real Hawaii.

Your guide was very friendly and we had the opportunity to taste local foods (that locals eat!) and some more modern traditional Hawaiian food.

Excellent tour with Ryan as guide. Very knowledgeable and personable. Went to about six different restaurants and had a meal course at each. I am not an adventurous eater but I had things I would never eat at home and it was all delicious. Items included oxtail soup, taro coated pancakes, raw fish, garlic chicken, and eggs with hamburger to name a few. We ate at out-of-the-way places where the locals go. Easy walking tour over several blocks. Spent about three hours. Highly recommend.
