What You Can Expect

Kaneohe Bay Kayak and Snorkel Tour to Coconut Island

Watch for sea turtles on this Oahu snorkeling tour.

This Kaneohe Bay snorkeling tour begins at your hotel door, where your local guide will meet you for transport to He’eia State Park. Set on Oahu’s windward coast, which faces east towards the island of Molokai, the beaches here are far less developed than those back in Waikiki.

Upon reaching isolated Kaneohe Bay, lifejackets, dry bags, and snorkeling gear are distributed by one of your guides. You’ll explore a map that explains the area, and receive professional paddling instruction before settling into your kayak. Next, you’ll conveniently tie up to an escort boat that does the hard work for you, as it tows your kayaks out towards the bay to maximize time spent snorkeling.

Once you unlink from the escort boat, your professional guide will lead you on a paddle towards the shores of Coconut Island, which at one point was used to film Gilligan’s Island, but is now used for research and educational classes by the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. During your paddle, your guide will narrate the cultural history surrounding Kaneohe Bay, and discuss the unique marine ecology of Oahu’s only barrier reef.

Upon reaching the shores of Coconut Island, you’ll next embark on a snorkeling tour of a protected section of coastline, where sea turtles, manta rays and even eagle rays will sometimes pay you a visit. After you work up an appetite from snorkeling, you’ll snack on granola bars and sip on juice before paddling back across the bay.

If the morning trade winds start to blow — or you’re simply tired from snorkeling — the escort boat is available to shuttle you all the way back towards the beach. On land, there are showers and changing rooms where you can freshen up for a barbecue lunch on the beach, where chicken, pork ribs and corn on the cob are served with an oceanfront view. Pair the meat with some fresh green salad and sweet slivers of pineapple, and then settle in for the comfortable ride to your Waikiki hotel.

Please note: This 6-hour Kaneohe Bay snorkeling tour includes about three hours on water and three hours on land.

Great tour and operators. Their customer service was great. Evening before tour a huge rainstorm washed mud into reefs and they promptly called on morning of trip to either cancel or reschedule due to zero visibility in the water. Glad I rescheduled as we went to a different snorkel spot than planned which was awesome.

This was by far our best adventure. The island, the guudes, ,and the expertise on snorkeling were all top notch. The lunch was FABULOUS! This group is a non profit that sponsors children's programs to learn more about the bay environment and how to protect the marine life.we loved this experience.

The tour guides were amazing and friendly. While I have been kayaking before, this was my and my husband's first times snorkeling. The instructions were brief so we could get to the fun parts as quickly as possible, but they made sure we knew what we were doing before we jumped in. We saw several sea turtles while we were in the water and dozens of species of fish. Easily the most memorable part of our honeymoon.

Good experience. Get to snorkel on a reef that is not vertical and has lots of things to see. Turtles may be seen swimming or may be resting in the reef. People are very interesting in making the experience better. Kayaking can be a challenge, but they will provide a tow if you run out of arm power. Good for novices to experienced kayakers and snorkelers.

Wonderful day experienced, we saw a turtle right on the tow out! Beautiful scenery and the waters were calm and easy to paddle. The snorkelling was in a stunning underwater location and a turtle was spotted resting on the reef. We only wish we could have snorkelled more even though an hour was provided. Zoe and Natalie were excellent guides and a bug Mahalo to them!
