What You Can Expect

Palermo Street Food Walking Tour

Enjoy a walk through Palermo's Vucciria Market

Meet your guide in Piazza Verdi, near the iconic Teatro Massimo opera house. It’s the largest in Italy, and was in a pivotal scene in The Godfather: Part III. Get your Palermo ‘foodie’s passport,’ which you’ll get stamped at every tasting point along the tour.

Street food is cooked and served at street stalls, modest bakeries and old bars. This street food tour has been designed to show Palermo with no filters of any kind.

Begin making your way to the Vucciria Market and Mercato di Capo, two busy and colorful outdoor markets in Palermo. Listen as your guide offers insights into how Sicily’s unique culinary history informs its street food scene while vendors of local produce and seafood promote their goods. The Church of the Immaculate Conception is nearby, which you can visit if you like (own expense).

Get in line at neighborhood bakeries, cafes and street food stalls to try a variety of famous Sicilian street snacks. Munch on chickpea fritters called panelle and deep-fried balls of rice stuffed with meat, vegetables and cheese called arancine as you collect stamps in your foodie passport.

Sip on a sweet Sicilian wine to wash down your fried treats, and then head for a seasonal dessert. You may indulge in Sicily’s famous cannoli (deep-fried pastry cylinders filled with sweetened ricotta cheese), some gelato or a refreshing granita (a fruity slushy).

From June-September, the tour lasts 3 hours and finishes at Piazza San Domenico. From October-May, the tour is extended to 4 hours and includes visits the Quattro Canti with its Baroque architecture, Piazza Pretoria and its impressive fountain and the Ballarò Market. This tour finishes at the Palermo Cathedral.

The street food walking tour was, literally, a passport to a tasting extravaganza. At the start of the tour, Marco hands out a cardboard passport, which shows all of the places and foods you are going to try. Then he takes you on a great tour of the Capo market and surrounding area, where you get to interact with all of the local street vendors. Marco makes it fun and entertaining by telling great stories along the way. The food you will sample is amazing! Typical Sicilian fare at its simplest and tastiest form. Hint: Don't have a huge meal before you take this tour. You will want to save room in your stomach to thoroughly enjoy all it has to offer.

Hi,

We took the Palermo food tour and our guide was Francesca, whom we loved. She was enthusiastic, and managed not only to pronounce everyone's name but also remember them till the end of the trip. We had street food, like spleen sandwiches, a drink at the tavern, and Sicilian pizza among other things. She also told us about the buildings we passed, which was a bonus. I would recommend it for sure.

Very good intro to different districts of Palermo. Francesca is extremely knowledgeable about the history and background of her city. The foods we tasted were not what I would have selected off a menu but we we all delicious, even the most exotic, so it was a good learning experience for me. I would highly recommend this tour.

Informative and entertaining tour. Marco was a great guide. We ate some very tasty food and also some nearly inedible food, but it was all a great experience.
