Overview

Explore the geology around California’s legendary San Andreas fault during a guided 3-hour Jeep tour from Palm Desert. See a desert oasis fed by an underground spring as your naturalist guide describes how the Native American Cahuilla tribe used the desert's plants for food, medicine and shelter. Marvel at steep-walled canyons and tall twisted rock mountains, and learn about the plant and animal life of the area. Choose from a morning or after tour that includes light snacks, bottled water and round-trip transport from Palm Desert hotels.
  • Small-group open-air Jeep tour to the San Andreas Fault, from Palm Desert
  • Walk around a desert oasis fed by underground water sources
  • Hear about geology and California's earthquakes
  • Learn about the Native American Cahuilla tribe and early pioneer settlers
  • Travel with an expert naturalist guide
  • Small-group tour ensures a more personalized experience
After hotel pickup in Palm Desert, enjoy a scenic drive through the Coachella Valley landscape for about 30 minutes until your arrival at a private reserve for your tour by open-air Jeep.
Your expert guide explains the ecology of this desert environment and takes you to see one of its unique features: an oasis of native palms. There you can see water from an underground creek that has been forced up to the surface by the fault lines, creating a green oasis that supports a range of plant and animal life.
Then go to a recreated Native American site that illustrates how the native Cahuilla people managed to live in this harsh climate. See homes, a sweat lodge and artifacts, and hear details about survival skills needed for living in the desert. Your guide also shares details about life for early American and European settlers in the area.
Next up, get a close look at the San Andreas fault on an easy walk into a slot canyon. Your guide shows you parts of the rock that reveal the region's unique geology and discusses the impact of the collision of the Pacific and North American plates, including earthquakes. Drive through other sections of the fault for another perspective.
At the end of three hours, your guide returns you to your hotel in Palm Desert.

This was a super interesting trip, and we all benefitted greatly from all the information on the fault line and the desert our guide Cheyenne shared with us. It was well worth it.

Actually, I did not go on the tour. We sent our two adult children. They had a wonderful time, lots of great pictures and they were very impressed with the tour guide, Theresa spelling might be wrong. They felt she was very knowledgeable and made the tour fun. They would certainly recommend it .

This is a NOT TO BE MISSED tour! Cheyenne, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the tour information which included an incredible amount of information on the San Andreas Fault, the Plates the fault sits on, the Indians who lived in the canyons/area, the geology/rock formations, flora and fauna and the oasis. She also provided interesting and informative information about the Palm Springs area history. We have already sent the information to our friends who will be here in March. This tour is well worth the money.

This was a terrific tour. We were a bit concerned that maybe it would be dull but quite the opposite! The jeep was a fun ride, and the tour guide well informed and affable. We saw so many things, and learned a ton. Would definitely recommend.

First of all, Bonnie was fantastic as a tour guide. She provided a huge amount of interesting information and it was clear she loved what she does!

This tour went above and beyond expectations. We were able to see parts of the desert/mountains/canyons that I never thought we'd see. Learning about the fault line and that there are many more smaller faults in that area was fascinating. Walking through the oasis was also an amazing learning experience.

To also learn of how the Cahuilla learned to utilize the few resources they had to survive and thrive was highly interesting.

At first I thought this might be a bit expensive for a tour, but it was quickly clear that the price charged was worth every penny.
