Cheese and Wine Tasting in a Paris Cheese Cellar

Discover how cheese ripens on your tour of the cheese cellar

Bite into the history of French cheesemaking on this unique food tour in Paris. Make your way to a specialty cheese stop in the 3rd arrondissement, where you’ll meet your cheesemonger guide. Don a protective suit designed to preserve the delicate cheeses, and descend into a cool cellar filled with ripening blocks, rolls and wheels — some as large as 77 pounds (35 kg).

Learn about the traditional art of cheesemaking and the importance of the maturing process as you admire the cellar’s supply. Taste seven different varieties cut fresh from the block, such as Swiss Gruyère, bôfavre (a hard cheese from Switzerland's Jura Mountains), delicate Camembert, Etivaz (a hard cheese originating in the Alps) and Beaufort (a raw cow’s milk cheese).

Alternate bites of fragrant fromage with sips of fantastic French wine paired for complementary flavors. Also nibble on fresh baguettes and fruit to complete your gourmet tasting experience. After 1.5 hours in the cellar, emerge back into the streets of Paris as a newly minted wine-and-cheese connoisseur!

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Paris. Located in a nice neighborhood with lots of shops and cafes, the cheese shop was easy to find and the cellar is just beneath the shop. Pierre, who leads the tasting, was very knowledgable, generous and made the experience worthwhile. It was educational and fun and we left appreciating cheese in a whole new way. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves cheese and wine. Merci beaucoup Pierre!

First time cheese tasting. Even though I'm not a big cheese fan, our tour guide Pierre who has a keen gift for describing cheeses did an excellent job of making this an enjoyable experience. Since this takes place in the cheese store, it is more oriented towards cheeses than wines. However, Pierre did a good job of incorporating the wine into the cheese. I swear, I tried the same cheese three times using different methods, and it tasted different every time! This tour is definitely worth the price.

This experience was all it promised and more. Pierre, who leads the event, is passionate and knowledgeable and that makes the tour and tasting worthwhile. We were gad to have a proper introduction not only to seven of the hundreds of French cheeses but also, how to approach the rest of them. We enjoyed the individual cheeses and the pairings. Highly recommended for foodies!

This was a FABULOUS thing to do while in Paris! I am so thankful for having gotten this tip. Mr. Pierre Brisson was so educational, so informative, so generous and so welcoming to our small group. He was generous with his time, with his knowledge, and with the tastings. I've been to Paris many times but this is the first time that I have participated in such an activity. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this to anyone travelling to Paris. I also appreciate that we were a small group. It was really memorable and I learned a lot. Merci Pierre!

Pierre was a great host. Seeing inside the 1700s cellar and the modern cheese room was fantastic. Rows of different cheeses, just fascinating, hearing the stories of the cheese makers and then tasting their cheeses just made it all the more special. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves their cheese, their wine, or wants to experience a little of unique Paris.

I just wrote this review and it looks like Viator deleted it when I signed in, oh well - round two: This is a great thing to do for anyone who loves cheese. I am a chef and learned a lot about the process of cheese making as well as cheese tasting which I did not know was a practice much like wine tasting. The tour starts in front of a quaint cheese shop in what seems to be a very busy and non touristy part of town. Our guide Pierre introduced himself to our group of 8 and gave a brief overview. Then we stepped into the back of the building and down into the cheese cellar watch you step and if you're tall your head as well. Pierre explained the process of how cream and butter used to be derived using some old mechanical devices very cool. After we stepped into the dimly lit, high humidity cheese aging cooler where the process of cheese aging was explained in detail. We stepped back into the main cellar and sat down to learn how to properly taste 6 cheeses as well as 2 wines that came from Pierre's family vineyard which he used to work on before getting into cheese. This was a very delicious and educational event and our guide was knowledgeable and very friendly. At the end of the tasting we were invited to eat the remaining cheese. If you have room after there is a cool food hall behind the cheese shop.
