My brother and I did the self-guided tour. If you choose the same, be sure to bring your own earphones/headphones for the audio pen! For those of you with Apple Lightning EarPods / wireless accessories, those will not work because the audio pen only accepts accessories with 3.5mm audio jacks.
The bus left at 7:15AM sharp, and was very prompt about departures in general. If you go on this tour, be sure to not be late! Don't worry about food or toilets along the way there were two pit stops total one outbound, one inbound, each with quick bites like baguette sandwiches and pastries as well as very accommodating restrooms. Everyone is required to leave the bus during these pit stops, but I wouldn't be too worried about leaving inconsequential items behind--the bus is locked during the break. During the first break everybody brought all their stuff off, but by the second stop nobody really cared, and there was stuff littered all about the seats. At the first pit stop, we got the menu combo meal which comprised of a baguette sandwich, dessert pastry, and drink for under 10. If you want to keep costs down like we did, you can eat the pastry for breakfast/snack, and then save the baguette sandwich for lunch at the Mont.
Once we arrived at the parking area, those of us who chose the self-guided tour were free to proceed to the Mont. There is the option of a tram comes every half hour, moves fairly slowly, usually pretty crowded from what we saw, or you can walk directly to the entrance. If you don't mind the distance, I would recommend the latter, as a crowded tram will obstruct the beautiful view of the Mont. It is also better to walk on your way back to the bus if there isn't a tram in sight 20-30 minutes before your departure time. You do not want to be waiting on the bridge 10 minutes before your departure even if the tram were to appear right there and then, you'd never make it. Adjust this recommendation according to your own abilities, comfort levels, and time constraints
Once you reach the base of the Mont, you will have two choices: proceed into the entrance, or walk out on the sand AT YOUR OWN RISK. You will be warned more than once that the tide can sweep in very quickly, and there is danger of quicksand these warnings are certainly to be heeded, however us and many other small groups were able to safely navigate the area NEAR THE CHAPEL/BRIDGE without any protest from other guides or security personnel. I would not recommend venturing closer to the water for the above safety concerns. You won't get a better photo op of the Mont besides the bridge, which has a high tendency to be polluted with offloading trams and walking people. Whether you choose to walk on the sand or not, be sure to do it at the beginning and not when you've reached the top my brother and I burned valuable time changing our minds at the top.
Once you've reached the Abbey, choose the line for existing ticket-holders, which was to the left when we were there. Our Kanken backpacks were accepted in, as well as the food/drink within YMMV with other-sized backpacks and food not obfuscated by a bag. A quick stop at the ticket window to the left, and you're all set to explore the Abbey!
...that should be it. Though we were not part of their tours, the guides were still very helpful and friendly to us, and the trip overall was pleasant. Thanks to Viator and ParisCityVision for helping me and my brother realize a long-time bucket list destination!
Loved this tour. Worth every moment at this magical site. Would definitely recommend.
Amazing tour! While the trip was an all-day trip it was very organized and very informational. Our tour guides gave us a ton of information which really made the whole experience simply amazing!
This was a wonderful day and very easy to navigate the island and all of the historic areas to visit. Great choices for lunch or dinner in every budget. Thank you for a safe trip.
3 hour bus ride to Mont St. Michel was OK but the brief 1/2 hour rest and coffee stop was not long enough. Women had to wait 20 minutes to use the restroom. Other tour buses crowded rest stop. No rest and no breakfast. Plan ahead to eat before you get on the bus. They did not want hot drinks on the bus. Took self guided tour and ate apart from the group. Best thing we could have done. Moved along quickly on the tour with provided guide book.
Beautiful Abbey worth your visit. The bus tour was well organized. The luxury bus made the long trip less tiresome. We had enough time to do an independent tour of the Abby and eat lunch. The village is very quaint and delightful to walk through.
every thing was so good and on time. we spent 4 hours there. i recommend visiting Mont St.Michel to everybody.
the audioguide was useful. only unfortunately the weather was foggy and we could not take good fotos.
This really is an amazing site and a well deserved inclusion on the list of Unesco sites. Plenty of time was allowed in which to see the abbey and get lunch. The only downside is the distance from Paris. It's a very long day, but we were very glad we did it and would recommend this tour. We did the self-guided tour and were glad to have done it. We were able to pace the tour as we wanted rather than following a guide. The only thing I quibble with is the listening guide given to us from Paris City Vision downplayed the purpose of this abbey which was making copies of the Bible. They mentioned it more as an aside and I don't think that's fair to what actually happened and made the tour less interesting because of it. We do recommend this tour and it was very enjoyable!
The tour was great, the bus was very comfy. Things were well organised and the information given to passengers during the trip and on arrival was clear and easy to follow. I enjoyed it very much and so glad I booked this tour. Would definitely book with them again.
We did several tours this last trip and this was my favorite. I do wish they would have included entrance fees to the museums inside the Abby. This tour ONLY includes the entrance to the chapel. That's it. We paid more than 160 pp and it literally is just transportation. We are ok with not having lunch included as you can find better and cheaper eats inside BUT at least include the additional 9 euros per person to see everything the Abby has to offer. It is also a very very long way from Paris but we already knew this. My issue with that is that we went in a HUGE bus with several other travelers from different tour groups that spoke different languages. So you are hostage to listening to their tour guides in these foreign languages the entire way there. It's annoying and hard to shut your eyes to rest with all this happening. Do not like. Other than that, yes, the trip was totally worth it. This is a once in a lifetime thing to do and although I have complaints of the transport, it beats going on your own, getting lost, and of course a much longer travel time.
We returned to Paris by 9pm EXHAUSTED.
There is something so special about Mont Saint Michel. The structure itself but beyond that, the air, the sky, the colors. Mont Saint Michelle is a dessert for the senses. I was so happy to find the option for the independent excursion as I tend to have a personal aversion to large group tours. This option was perfect for me.
Well worth the visit - a long day, but the bus was a comfortable ride. Mont St-Michel is truly spectacular and a must do day trip.
It's a long day 5 hours driving each way including a 30 minute comfort stop meaning you get about 4 hours at Mont ST Michel. They provide you with an audio guide meaning you can explore the city and the church at your own pace which really helps you maximise the limited time there. I recommend it. You are on a bus with those that chose Mont St Michel with a guide so there are someone to ask questions to at the end.
Wonderful, wonderful trip to an absolutely beautiful place.
We did the self-guided tour. The Mont is so beautiful and the drive was pretty fast too. Does take a full day so really cannot plan to do anything in Paris in the evening. The bus was very comfortable, good timings on stops made. Only critic Could have stayed there 1 hour less.
Awesome experience, would recommend it to anyone The only problem I had, and it could be just me, but I found the map that goes with the information pen almost impossible to follow. Other than that, fantastic
This was a long day....almost 14 hours but we really wanted to see this UNESCO heritage site. The bus was comfortable with a rest stop each way. Mont st Michel was lovely and we had beautiful weather. We did it without a guide and that was fine. Just one disappointment...the cloister garden which should have been the highlight of the trip was being renovated!
Excellent trip! Very organized and everything ran on-time. Comfortable coach, good rest stops. Mont St-Michel is amazing and worth the day trip! Words and photos cannot even begin to describe it, you just have to see it for yourself.
The beauty of this place is well worth the drive. Just breathtaking and surreal. Just going to the top and looking out was amazing. I'm coming back again for sure and bringing my husband. Its a can't miss.
While it is a long day with a 4 hour drive each way, the time spent in Mont St-Michel made it worth it. The only bad part of the trip was waiting almost an hour for two people to show up to drive back to Paris. But they must have decided not to come back with the group without telling anyone.
The Mont St. Michel tour was great! Some of the people may have reservations about the long drive it is about 4 hours each way, but the tour bus is extremely comfortable and they make rest stops along the way for bathroom and food. Plus you're driving through the serene and bucolic Normandy countryside which is just beautiful to behold. I really loved watching all the rolling green fields and heards of sheep and cows. And then when you see the island of Mont St. Michel rise up out of the ocean over the fields of sheep...simply breath taking! I first thought that 4 hours would not be enough time to explore the entire island, but it is TINY. There is literally one little street that leads up to the abby and the abby itself doesn't take more than 2 hours to do the entire thing - and that is going at a slow pace. I think it took me about 1.5 hours. I loved all the little shops and restaurants. I recommend having a crepe at La Sirene.
This tour was our favourite one! So glad we visited this UNESCO World Heritage site. It's so beautiful and an amazing place to explore. The bus ride was worth it on the comfortable coach. We were independent and didn't have a guide, but the information pens and maps were really helpful. They allowed us to trek around at our own pace and still find out all the details. We got a glorious sunny day for our visit and I wouldn't have missed it for the world!
This is a beautiful trip and we highly recommend it. The Mont St. Michel is amazing!! The place itself is wonderful!! We don't have enough words to describe the beauty of that place. However, we only had 3 hours and a half to explore the Mont. Saint Michel. I was told we would have 4 hours to explore the Mont. To see most things we actually had to walk very fast, and couldn't spend much time looking and learning about the castle. It is a long trip. Another 4 hours to go back to Paris.
