Paris Walking Tour - The French Revolution

Place de la Concorde, Paris

In the late 18th century, Paris was the stage where most of the bloody events of the French Revolution played out, forever altering the course of European history. Layered beneath the bustle and romance of modern-day Paris, traces of the tumultuous events can still be found.

Your revolutionary walking tour begins near Les Invalides, where you’ll meet your historian guide in the afternoon. Learn how 30,000 weapons were stolen here by protesters and used to overtake the Bastille. Visit the Place de la Bastille, site of the former prison, and listen as your guide recounts the dramatic storming that officially ignited the revolution in 1789.

See where the Tuileries Palace once stood and hear how revolutionaries used its once-royal chambers as headquarters for a fledgling new government. Pass by the imposing Conciergerie, a former prison where Marie Antoinette was held captive after the fall of the monarchy, and stroll through the Place de la Concorde, where she and husband King Louis XVI were both beheaded. Imagine the gruesome scene here as your guide recounts the many lives lost to the guillotine during the bloody years of the Reign of Terror.

When your 2-hour tour concludes near Notre Dame, depart with a newfound appreciation of the bravery, tyranny and chaos of the Revolution and how it shaped the Paris you see today.

We all loved this tour. Again, the guide was excellent. We covered quite a bit of ground and were treated to an excellent potted history of Paris, the royals and the people. A wondrous introduction to a week in Paris.

When booking my trip to Paris some 5 months ago, I focused my activities around going on this walking tour. Despite running a few minutes late, the tour guide was still at the meeting point and greeted us promptly. At each stop our guide gave us plenty of information about what the site was and what the historical context/importance of the stop was without being too convoluted. Whilst at a stop at Place de la Concode, she pointed out that whilst the square today does not have any obvious markers of its violent role during the Revolution, there is a subtle homage to the guillotine if you look very closely and your guide happens to point it out!! Overall, very pleased with this walking tour and I would wholeheartedly recommend if you have an interest in history.

Lots of great information. Would have been even better if the weather was warmer and drier. There was some confusion as to the meeting place to start the tour. We were given a street address, but our guide was waiting as the nearby Metro stop about 1/2 a block away. A phone call got us all in the right place.

My daughter and I agree this tour with Gil was our favorite part of our trip! His knowledge of the French Revolution was amazing both from the grand picture to the intimate details of the lives of those who were affected. The history was so interesting and he built a platform for the revolution by informing us of the early history and society which led to the breakdown of the Royal family and Paris itself. Fantastic.

We had an excellent tour guide I believe from California, originally who was so knowledgeable and gave us so much information. He had an excellent speaking voice and delivery. He was just wonderful! I would say that The French Revolution tour was my favorite. Thank you!

Gil took us on a great walk of some key locations that he used to tell a story of the 1789 Revolution. I really liked the length and pace of the tour. Two hours was just enough history and information to spark my curiosity and want to come home and read more but not so long that I got tired or bored. At my request, Gill recommended a couple of books to further my understanding of this subject.
