What You Can Expect

Chichen Itza Day Trip from Playa del Carmen

Admire the ancient architecture of Chichen Itza

Greet your guide at your Playa del Carmen hotel and begin your journey to one of the world’s most significant archeological sights. Relax during a scenic drive to Chichen Itzla before stopping at a spectacular cenote.

Disembark your vehicle at either the Ikil or Hubiku cenote and descend into the atmospheric depths of the subterranean sinkhole. Watch as iridescent natural light dances upon the water’s surface and learn the origin of the word ‘cenote’, which translates from Mayan as ‘collapsed cave.’ Plunge into the inviting waters and feel fish tickle your feet as you swim and splash.

Arrive at Chichen Itza and split into smaller groups for an intimate tour with your personal guide. Wander the site for 1.5 hours and listen as your guide unravels Mayan mysteries and fascinating facts.

Gaze at the iconic Kukulcan Pyramid, also known as El Castillo, and marvel at the symmetry and skillful craftsmanship of the structure. Learn about how the structure was built according to astronomical research, and discover why the 365 steps represent each day of the solar ear. Listen to the calls of exotic birds as you wander through lush vegetation and peer at a cenote with great sacrificial significance.

Visit the colossal ball court to learn of ancient athletic events and decipher elaborate murals that depict Mayan scenes. Discover the mystifying acoustics of the ball court before hearing gruesome stories of decapitations during football games.

After your guide has concluded the informative commentary, wander the ruins at your own pace during some relaxed free time. Return to your vehicle and journey to a local restaurant for a delicious buffet lunch; feast upon local specialties like fresh fish, spiced rice and tender meat as locals perform traditional dances to folkloric music. After enjoying these cultural expressions, relax during the return journey to your Playa del Carmen hotel.

We loved this tour. They were on time with picking us up and communicated on where to meet us. Our guide was awesome. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We only had a short time in Playa del Carmen and this tour was great to get to see some ruins, experience a cenote and see a Spanish influenced town. I would highly recommend this tour.

Tour was amazing and totally worth it. A van picked us up near our hotel in Playa del Carmen then an hour trip to Cancun then several more hours to Chichen Itza. Our first stop was a souvenir shop then to Cenote Ik-Kil in Yucatan, 130 feet deep, 85 feet wide. After that we went to a buffet lunch close by then headed to Chichen Itza. We spent about 2 hours, mostly with our tour guide, who was very knowledgeable and has direct roots to the area so he knew the history. Despite the 12 hour day trip and spending half of it in the van/bus, seeing the historical ruins/pyramids were a once in a lifetime experience! I highly recommend it.

Great trip! Antonio was an excellent guide who had a genuine passion for the history of the native Mayan and Chichen Itza. The transportation was on time and comfortable for the most part, but they are made for short people and do not offer much leg room I am only 5'7. The stop at the cenote was my favorite part. Beautiful and refreshing. I wish I could have stayed there all day! The food at the lunch stop was a bit bland, but our guide warned us of this beforehand they want to accommodate tourists' palettes, and told us to ask the server for the authentic pepper sauce habanero if we want some real spice.

Be sure to bring cash and small bills for tips and shopping, esp. in Chichen Itza. Be sure to bargain with the vendors in Chichen Itza, because they will always reduce the price. Bring a hat and sunscreen for Chichen Itza, because there is a lot of walking and little shade.
