The local operators are the Amigo Tours company. I received a email confirmation from them, and the pick-time and location was easy to setup esp. if you are staying at a resort. Very responsive on email. It is an early start, but it worth it to avoid the heat and crowds that come later in the day. They were punctual, provided water bottles and air conditioned transport from and to your resort. Marco was a great guide. Very knowledgeable, and very patient with answering question by the tour group. The 'lunch' was the only downside, but since the tour bus does make a stop at a convenience store, you can pick up the snacks you want. If your main goal is to see Chichen Itza, this is the best tour to take.
Early pickup and 2.5 hours of transportation each way was well worth the great information provided by Marco and a 3-hour visit to this amazing Wonder of the World.
We were picked up outside of our resort Playa del Carmen - Vidanta well before dawn, transported via coach, and arrived at Chichen Itza just after it opened. We were able to leave our stuff on the coach which was quite comfortable.
Here is our timeline, for reference:
5:30 - pickup
8:15 - arrival with a stop for restroom and coffee
8:30 - entrance
8:30-10:30 - guided tour
10:30-11:30 - free time for walking about
11:30 - departure
3:00 - hotel drop off
Note that some were picked up in the coach, while others were taken by a passenger van to an intermediary pickup the same for drop off.
Our group comprised about 100 people however, we were able to hear and see the presentation by Marco pretty well. Obviously, it would have been better with a small group, but the size was manageable.
Our guide stopped at each of the four major points, and provided information about the history, construction, and culture of the Mayan civilization. He provided a good mix of interesting facts and Mayan numerology.
I've been to this site in the past, and enjoyed this trip more in comparison, primarily because of the added perspective. I could not imagine visiting Mexico and NOT going to this amazing historical site.
Excellent tour. Tour guide Marco was very knowledgeable and made the tour fascinating. Although the pickup time was very early, it was worth it to not compete with the crowd to see everything and hear the guide. I especially appreciated splitting our group into 2 groups English and Spanish speaking so each group was small enough to interact with Marco.
The excursion was well worth getting up early. Marco was excellent at showing us many details that We all thought were amazing. He had pictures and explained many interesting finding that they know about the Mayan people. He showed us some amazing sounds throughout the site and was ready to answer questions. He knew so much , I would definately do a smaller tour just with him to learn more. thank you, it was fabulous
The tour started early, but was absolutely more than worth it. We arrived safely to Chichen Itza after 9 AM before the crowds and heat. Our super competent Super Frank made our day. His ability to engage listeners was outstanding but never bored. Now we know a lot about Mayans. Thanks to our driver we came safely back before 4 PM. One improvement area is to streamline pick up process. We had to wait before the big bus arrived and we in mnemonic buses could join. Highly recommended!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this early tour of Chichen Itsa with Amigo Tours. It's worth getting up early! Because it does quite hot and crowded by noon, which is when you'll be leaving. If you want an all day tour of this place and it is huge with lots to see, this is not the tour for you. If you want to see the highlights in cooler temperatures with an awesome tour guide and a ride on a nice, large AC bus, then this tour is a safe bet. Our tour guide, Super Frank, and his team were, indeed, super. Once at Chichen Itsa, the English speakers went with Frank and the Spanish only speakers went with the other guy sorry, don't remember his name. During the ride, Frank fluently switched back and forth between English and Spanish, very easy to follow. Tip: Bring some snacks and/or eat before you leave Chichen Itsa, and an umbrella if you don't want to be in the sun for three hours. Overall, we would take another tour with Amigo Tours.
This was an excellent excursion to Chicken Itza and well worth the early morning start. We were the first bus into the car park and the first group into the site so got fantastic photos without any other tourists in the pictures. Marco, our tour guide, was quite exceptional in his knowledge and enthusiasm and made the whole Mayan culture come to life - we didn't want him to stop talking about it!
Very good tour, a must-do if you like Mayan Ruins. I want to mention the incredible work and knowledge of our tour guide MARCO. He is without a doubt, the best tour guide to have around if you do these kind of tours. His english is perfect and he had so much interesting facts and informations to share with us about the ruins, the mayas, the civilization... i've learned so much during this tour. Once again, Marco, remember this name, if you're lucky enough to have him as your guide, you're gonna have a wonderful experience. 10 on 10

One of the 7 wonders of the modern world with good reason. Truly impressive. And you really should take advantage of the early access, since it offers not only small group liberties but you can get some unobstructed by tourists shots. Expansive grounds with monumental edifices. Our guide was knowledgeable while adding a bit of unsubstantiated and factually questionable color for fun. The property is well maintained by the state - something which distressed me while visiting Pompeii. A proud cultural achievement presented by a proud country. Not to be missed - well worth the time and cost.
Note that the tour will require a full day. We left at 5:00AM from the Iberostar Tucan in Playa Del Carmen and returned at about 3:30PM. There were stops on the way for those needing the bathroom and there is food/drink available on site.
Really fun and interesting tour. Everything ran perfectly and the early access is a must! Marco our tour guide, was superb and was extremely knowledgeable about everything we came across. He was engaging and funny. Would recommend this Tour to everyone.
It was an early rise pickup at 5 am, but it was well worth it!
The archaelogist Marco explained a lot about the Mayan Culture and Chichen Itza. This already started in the bus, which made the long bus drive go by pretty fast. He was very knowledgeable and had a lot of humor as well.
Our busdrive Mario drove safely and was super friendly to everyone also.
When we arrived at Chichen Itza we were the first bus in line before the park opened. By the time we left the site it was getting crowded, which is not great for pics either.
It was great to get a tour when it was still almost empty better weather too!. The location is huge, you will not be able to see everything, but Marco makes your brief time there an amazing one!
We would highly recommend this tour to anyone.
The tour was amazing. If we were ever in Cancun, we would go again in a heartbeat. Our guide Marco was so knowledgeable and approachable. We loved his depth of knowledge that he shared with us. Our driver Ramon was safe and got us there to be one of the first buses in that morning. The ruins were mesmerizing. If you have a chance to go on their tour, you will not be disappointed. My only issue is that they say the tour is 9 hours which is correct if you are staying in or around Cancun. Everyone that is picked up from the Playa del Carmen area are taken by van to meet with the bus just past the Cancun international airport instead of driving straight to Chichen Itza. If you are staying at the Occidental at Xcaret Destination resort, be prepared for a long day as you will be the first picked up 445am and the last dropped off 450pm so approx 12 hours of which you spend only 3 of those hours at Chichen Itza from 9am to 12 noon. It is definitely hotter and a lot more packed by noon. If you are picked up in Cancun, you can probably be back at your hotel a little after 2pm. Don't get me wrong. Early access to Chichen Itza is definitely worth it, but we prepared for spending a lot of time in a van if you are coming from the Playa del Carmen area and especially if your hotel is south of Playa like the Occidental Xcaret. The first two hours of the tour was guided by Marco and my wife and I could have spent all day listening to what he had to say and looking at the carved stone monuments and ruins. The last hour is free to go around on your own and spend more time on the ruins that you were intrigued by. You can walk to the sacred cenote during this free time if you want. Next time we go, we will probably skip walking to the cenote and spend more time looking at the main ruins. Realistically, you need days to take in the Chichen Itza ruins. If only we could have Marco with us all three days. We didn't get to the museum nor have time for any of the restaurants, but a nice cool drink before we got back on the bus was definitely worth it as he was really heating up.
Best tour! The Archaeologist was extremely informative and knowledgable. The bus was right on time for pickup. The bag lunch was enough to not be totally hungry and Chichen Itza had food and snacks there as well. Worth every penny! One of the best experiences on my vacation! Love my personalized Mayan calendar that was available for purchase!
Best idea to go early and avoid crowds and heat! Marco the archeologist was extremely pleasant, knowledgeable, accommodating, approachable. Wish we had more time with him. Would take another trip with him anyway
Amazing trip! David was our tour guide. He was amazing and very passionate about the history. Early morning pick up was 5am from Riu tequila but the coached stopped at a services for coffee and then we hit the road. It was just over 2 hours from playacar. Fantastic trip highly recommend!!!
This was truly one of the best experiences filled with amazing history at every turn. Thank you for the tour. I would do it again.
Early pick up from our hotel with an early arrival at Chichen Itza was well worth it. We had the place to ourselves and were able to take loads of photos and soak up the atmosphere without hundreds of other tourists - as we were leaving it was a different matter. The guide was good, lots of information given to us before our arrival. Would definitely recommend this to anyone staying in Playa del Carmen.
This was my first experience with viator and I have to say it was EXCELLENT!! We were prepared for a long day, in total 10 hours. But it was well worth it. Frank, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable and had a personality that made the trip fun!! I would recommend this trip to anyone!!
we left early 4am but it was worth all the effort. The guide Marco was amazing in the knowledge of Maya culture and chichen itza . I would highly recommend this tour above the others because the knowledge you recieve you will find nowhere else. L.S. Lenexa Ks
This tour is done through Amigo Tours-Cancun our tour guide was the wonderful Marco and our driver for the trip was Carlos.
It started off with an extremely early morning with a 5am pick up at our resort. Marco jumped out of the bus to greet us and we were on our way. We stopped to meet/pick up the rest of the group at the meeting point then were on our way to chichen itza I slept the entire way!. I can not recommend enough how AMAZINGLY worthwhile it is to go early. When we arrived at Chichen itza, we were the second bus there and pretty much had the entire site to ourselves. The second and probably the best part is that it is nice and cool early in the morning.
Our driver Carlos was an extremely safe driver and we felt so comfortable in the nice clean bus that he transported us in. Marco was an amazing tour guide. He has an archeological background and his passion for the mayan culture/history is extremely clear. We got such a detailed and unique tour from him and I wish I could go back tomorrow with family and friends to have them experience it! It is such a beautiful site and the information that Marco provided us with left us literally speechless! Thank you Marco and Carlos for the wonderful trip!!
Although it was early in the morning the trip was so worth it. To be there before any big groups was great and to be leaving before the heat got unbearable was great. The guide knew so much.
What an amazing experience! It is so worth getting up early, to beat the heat and the crowds. Also, unlike other tours we did, we had an actual archeologist, Marcos, who knew the history and made the trip so worth while. The only complaint is the lunch which was awful, but that is also said in other reviews, so we knew what to expect. This was definitely worth every penny and I would highly recommend it!
