This is a half day tour. Please note, the tour route and sights may vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. It is always our goal to provide you with the most interesting adventure possible.
Departing downtown Portland, we’ll head east along the Columbia River towards the quaint town of Troutdale, known as the Gateway to the Gorge. We will join the beautiful Historic Columbia River Highway, the first planned scenic roadway in the United States, and wind our way along the Sandy River to our first stop for the day: Crown Point. This famous overlook sits 733 feet above the Columbia River, atop the remains of a lava flow that swept through the Gorge around 14 to 17 million years ago! There, we will find 180-degree amazing views of the Columbia River Gorge and have time to explore the Vista House. This intricately designed observatory and museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
From there, we will again join the historic highway as we drive deeper into the Columbia River National Scenic Area. Our first waterfall for the day will be the dramatic Latourell Falls, which plunges 249 feet over a massive wall of columnar basalt. Depending on the season, a short .25 mile paved trail hike will be led to get a closer view of the falls.
The grand Multnomah Falls will be the next stop in our journey. Plummeting 620 feet in two major steps, Multnomah Falls is the highest waterfall in Oregon and second highest in the nation! There, we will explore the Multnomah Falls Historic Lodge (a Cascadian style stone and timber lodge built in 1925) as well as the beautiful Multnomah Falls itself. During the gorge fire of 2017, the wildland fire crew fought tirelessly and ultimately saved this historic landmark. The easily accessible viewing platform offers a full view of the Benson Bridge and cascading falls beyond it.
Onward to Bonneville Fish Hatchery. There, we will spend about 20 minutes on a short walking tour of this impressive Fish Hatchery (the largest in Oregon) and Sturgeon viewing center! At the viewing center we will visit local celebrity: “Herman” the sturgeon. Herman is over 70 years old, 10-feet long, and 450 pounds!
Our journey will return us to Portland via the Columbia River scenic route (approximately 45 mins).
Amazing trip. Dan was our guide, and he was very personable and knowledgeable about the local history and area in an around Portland. I would strongly recommend this trip for a beautiful sampling of the Oregon landscape.
This was a first rate afternoon of sightseeing. Our knowledgeable guide, John, highlighted the details, and narrated the tour with enthusiasm and humor. I was in Portland for a day and a half the tour gave me a memorable experience of the natural beauty of the area. I highly recommend it. Mark C.
Our tour guide was wonderful, very informed about the area. He picked us up on time, had water and snacks and gave us ideas for the best viewing of the waterfalls along with the history. You could tell he loved what he does and that made the tour a 5-star
So beautiful and our guide was full of information.
Beautiful day trip,we will be sure to go to the Columbia River Gorge again.
Great overview of the Columbia Gorge. Our afternoon driver John was a gracious and well informed host. He added a lot of local information about the area while we explored the different stops. Well worth the money.
I was skeptical at first of this but decided last minute to go for it. And that was a good decision. It was a kick-ass trip, using the local tour company Wildwood Adventures. Our guide's name was Jessie and she did a great job. I would recommend anyone who is thinking about this to do it. It was the best part of our vacation to Portland.
This has to be the best way to visit the waterfalls of the Columbia River Gorge. Ride in a luxury, climate-controlled vehicle while listening to your tour guide explain the sites, then hop out at each waterfall and lookout to experience the beautiful nature that Oregon has to offer through short, easy hikes. In addition to the waterfalls, we also visited the million dollar outhouse Vista House at Crown Point and a fish hatchery. Ross was an EXCELLENT tour guide extremely knowledgable about the history of the area. I definitely recommend this tour!
Very friendly and knowledgeable guide. It was just as advertised - comfortable, on time, and informative. Beautiful falls.
My son left his book in the van, no markings on it at all -- the company figured out to whom it belonged, called me, and brought it with another tour the next day for me to pick it up. Class act.
This tour was spectacular. Our guid was amamzimg ,knowledgeable, funny and personable. We came away not only with a wonderful education of the beautiful landscape that is Oregon but with many little pearls and fun facts. Definitely worth the trip!
