What You Can Expect

Oregon Coast Day Trip from Portland: Astoria and Cannon Beach

Picturesque Coastal Town of Astoria

Your 9-hour tour of Oregon’s northern coast starts with early-morning hotel pickup in downtown Portland. Be sure to grab your coffee and breakfast for the 2-hour ride to Astoria, a charming hill town located at the intersection of the Columbia River and the Pacific coast. Disembark at Coxcomb Hill for a visit to the Astoria Column. Admire the story en frieze that envelops the column before climbing to the top for an unrivaled view of the colorful town, the coast range and the Columbia River.

Next, head to the Columbia River Maritime Museum. With your guide, learn about famous shipwrecks, early European exploration, lighthouses and Oregon's thriving fishing industry. See a variety of vessels, both indoors and out on the Columbia River — a critical waterway for transportation and commerce in the NW.
Then head into Astoria for some antiquing and lunch (own expense) before continuing south to Cannon Beach, where you can see Haystack rock, an enormous monolith that earned fame in the film The Goonies. Walk out to Haystack’s base (if the tide is out), explore tide pools and glimpse scurrying sea creatures. Then enjoy some free time to walk along the beach, warm up with locally-roasted coffee, and peruse the town’s eclectic shops and art galleries.
Your return trip stops at Camp 18, a historical logging museum that provides a window into Oregon’s timber industry. You’ll arrive back at your Portland hotel in the evening.

Terrific day trip. The guide was friendly and engaging, gave the group ample time to see the sights. We even made a pit stop for some beef jerky along the way.

Had a great time despite the torrential downpour on the drive out. Tour guide was awesome-very knowledgeable and friendly!

This is a wonderful day trip. From the small charm of Astoria to the beauty of Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock, everything was amazing. It is a photographer's dream location. The low sun of November made for some spectacular images. Our guide was so much fun and knew so much about the locations. The small group made it easier to know everyone.

This tour was great because we were on a small bus...eight in our over 65 group plus one other couple. Steve was a fabulous hippy-looking guy with tons of knowledge, stories, and humor. We are glad Portland is Portland and not Boston. We saw and learned about clear cutting. It was windy and cold at Ecola Park. The sky was clear and blue so we got great photos all along the way...from the Sitka spruce to Haystack Rock in Cannon and Astoria Column in Astoria where two of our eight climbed the 164 stairs. Enjoyed lunch and cocktails at Baked Alaska in Astoria. The route down followed the Columbia River and we saw thousands of cut logs waiting to be shipped.
Another fabulous day with a great guide. Thank you Steve!!!!!

Guide/Driver was knowledgeable of the area and was able to provide interesting facts and stories about the areas we were visiting. The itinerary was just as described as well as the length of the tour. Pick up at our hotel went smoothly as planned. Very good tour for a day-trip. We would highly recommend this tour to others interested in discovering the Oregon Coast but who are not keen on driving themselves especially in unfamiliar areas.

Our tour guide, Julie, was incredibly knowledgeable of the history of the area and was extremely friendly. The Oregon Coast itself was super beautiful and was a perfect getaway from Portland.

Our guide for this tour was fantastic! She talked just enough and didn't bore us. Actually she was pretty entertaining and seemed to really know her stuff. She even stopped at a roadside stand after telling us about Marionberries so we could get some to try. She also took our photo which made for a nice souvenior of our trip. Cannon Beach was a wonder and I could have stayed there all day perhaps a future trip?. Our day was perfect.
