What You Can Expect

Private Tour: Porto Day Trip

Taste delicious port wine on this private day trip

Meet your professional guide at your central Porto hotel for a full-day private tour of Porto. Feel free to request specific tour preferences aboard your vehicle and your expert guide will happily tailor your trip accordingly.

Cruise along northern Portugal’s coast and pass Matosinhos, a charming coastal city, known widely for its flavorful seafood. As you approach Vila Nova de Gaia, the primary production center of Port (fortified wine), enjoy views of the Douro River which is famous for transporting grapes to the region’s numerous wine cellars.

Climb aboard a rabelo (if upgrade selected), a classic wine barrel cargo ship, and enjoy a splendid 1-hour ride along the tranquil Douro River. Notice Porto’s six bridges, in particular the metal double decker bridge called Ponte de Dom Luís I. Engineered by Gustave Eiffel’s protege, observe its striking similarity to Paris’ Eiffel tower.

Hop off your rabelo and stroll into a Port wine cellar for a one-of-a-kind tasting. As you sip white, ruby and tawny varietals, learn how each of these wines are enjoyed as aperitifs and digestifs. After the tasting, enjoy lunch at local restaurant (own expense). Your guide can offer recommendations at your request.

Next, cross the bridge back to Porto for an afternoon of the city’s best attractions. Climb up Clérigos Tower for some of Porto’s best vantage points. Then, resume your tour at Livraria Lello & Irmão, a remarkable Art Nouveau bookshop with a marvelous wooden staircase at its center. Observe the brilliant stain-glass ceilings as you hear how this library helped inspire J.K. Rowling to write Harry Potter.

Continue your Porto day trip at the 12th-century Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto). Then, visit São Bento Train Station and see its tile panels depicting historical scenes of Portugal. Finally, enjoy the ambiance of Ribeira, the most historic quarter of Porto, and its charming square which is designated World Heritage by UNESCO.

As late afternoon approaches head back to your Porto hotel where your tour ends.

The day started on a bad note we had received and email that the tour was going to start earlier than the expected time so we were out waiting for 30 minutes. When I called it sounded like the office thought our tour was at the regular time. They informed the guide, he rushed over and was there in minutes. We kept a positive attitude and were rewarded with a wonderful day.

The guide Jose was superb a very knowledgeable young man, he was personable, flexible and always conscious of the different needs of his guests. Jose made sure to ask questions to tailor the tour to our needs and preferences he found a great place for lunch where the food was awesome and the atmosphere really matched our easy going personalities. He found exactly what I wanted to experience for port tasting and I am grateful for his awesome recommendation. During his down time he was on the phone making reservations and adjusting the schedule to fit our needs.

Private tours are bit more expensive but you also get a lot more out of your day on larger tours you often get rushed on things you like and linger in boring areas, not the case here. Also Jose is able to park the vehicle in places we would not have known about. When an area is done, he is also is able to let us linger and get the vehicle instead of having to walk back through a place where we have been before.

Wonderful day. Thanks Jose!

We had a great time with our guide. He took us to amazing places, suggested good food and monuments to see, and always thought of how to best use our time! Since it was a private tour, he let us roam ans shop when possible. He knows Porto very well!

Great tour! We are a family of 5 and were picked up by our guide and driver from our hotel at 9:30AM and we spent a wonderful and informative day with her. We first drove out along the river to the Matosinhos area, then back into the city center for a walk around the old town. Our guide was very flexible and accommodating - picking up back up in the car after the rain kicked in and taking us back to our hotel for a quick pit stop to pick up some extra layers. We then had lunch at an excellent restaurant recommended by the guide, then we took an hour long boat trip along the river. We then did a tour and tasting at the Croft port cellar.

We had an excellent day and would recommend the tour to all.

1 star rating: I do not recommend this January 2015

Porto in itself is a fabulous city but I think next time I will get around myself using the subway. The company we used had a very rude man.I was lost to get to the destination. Hotel and he never helped me.his statement was "that's not my problem"I didn't pay 193.00 for that kind of reaponse.!!!
