What You Can Expect

Small-Group Tour of Aveiro and Coimbra

Coimbra University

Start with 9am pickup at your hotel in Porto, then make the 47-mile (76-km) drive to Aveiro in a comfortable van that’s Wi-Fi equipped and stocked with bottled water. Upon arrival in Aveiro, tour the colorful downtown with your guide: Aveiro’s canals are lined with picture-perfect houses, some art nouveau gems, and a fleet of moliceiros, slender boats with curving prows.

Continue south to the university town of Coimbra, whose historic center follows the picturesque Rio Mondego. When you get to Coimbra, you’ll have some free time to buy lunch on your own (your guide can give tips on the best places to eat). The first stop in the afternoon is the UNESCO-listed University of Coimbra, where a cluster of historic buildings commands views across the landscape. Stop by Coimbra’s historic cathedral, then take a walking tour of the winding, cobblestone streets of the historic center, discovering aqueducts, gardens, convents, and monasteries.

Following your time in Coimbra, begin the 75-mile (121-km) return trip to Porto, where this 9-hour trip concludes with drop-off at your hotel.
