Wine Tour of the Vinho Verde Region from Porto Including Lunch

Enjoy the famous green wine from Portugal!

In the morning, meet your guide for a pickup at your Porto hotel and then begin your small-group wine tour of the renowned Minho province. As you drive in your air-conditioned minivan, learn about the region that cultivates Vinho Verde or green wine. Hear about the 30,000 plus producers whose heritage is creating this specialty wine.

Take a break on your drive north and see a hidden area where stunning vine-laden hillsides receive fresh gusts of wind from the Atlantic. Continue another hour or so to Celorico de Basto, old town which boasts a beautiful vantage point of forested mountains. Here, savor your first tasting of crisp green wine which was is named for its early creation, not color. Learn how the local topography and climate help form Vinho Verde’s light complexion and unique flavor.

Afterward, take a break for lunch at a traditional Portuguese diner. Enjoy the flavors of a rich and nourishing stew and delicious cod. While savoring your meal, gaze out at the breathtaking views of Amarante and its green farmland.

Next, head to the nearby city of Amarante, which is thought to have been established in the 4th century BC. Here, wander through its charming city center and see the Church St Goncalo, which honors an influential Portuguese priest. By now you’re thirsty again, so stroll nearby to a farm’s renovated manor house and enjoy another wine tasting. Inside, notice the homemade sausages dangling from the rustic rafters as you swirl your next pour of wine.

Following your last gulp, hop back in your minivan and return to your Porto hotel where your tour ends in the evening.

This is an excellent alternative to the more popular Douro Valley tours. Our guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating and picked us up from right outside out apartment.

We would absolutely encourage people to try this tour and experience the fabulous vineyard of the entrepreneurial Fernando Fernandes and much, much more!

Quite interesting tour. Especially first part of the day. We have really interesting walking with owner of the first small winery and wine in this winery was beautiful. Tasting of the wine in this winery with range of other delicacies produced on the estate or in the area was excellent.

This tour was our favorite activity of our entire vacation in Porto and Lisbon. Our tour guide, Pedro, was really great - besides being extremely personable and knowledgeable about the area and wineries, he also gave us some suggestions for restaurants in Porto that were delicious! In addition, I appreciate that he gave us time to explore on our own during some parts of the tour.

As other reviewers have stated, the first winery of this tour - Quinta das Escomoeiros - is something really special. The owner, Fernando, walked us around the property and then provided a tasting red, rose, and white vinho verde with cheese, etc. The relaxing nature of the experience made us want to stay all day, but the following lunch in Amarante and second winery tour at Quinta da Aveleda were also very enjoyable. While we can get Aveleda wine in the U.S., the winery property is beautiful, making it a great place for photos. Overall, I highly recommend this tour and the tour company, Cooltour OPorto!

This is a trip that should not be missed. We had an excellent driver and guide, Pedro who was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. We learnt so much, not just about wine and wine production, but about the whole area and it's history. The two visits were contrasting and both exceptional in their own way. The morning was spent on a small estate, around which we were taken by the enthusiastic owner. It concluded with a generous tasting of the estate's wine plus a range of other delicacies produced on the estate or in the area. The word 'awesome' comes to mind in summing up the experience. Lunch at a small family run restaurant in Amarante was very good - grilled meats accompanied by salads, rice and potatoes and washed down with a local red wine. The second visit was to a large commercial producer, a total contrast to the morning's visit but also very interesting and informative. In all, a brilliant day that provided a great experience of the Vinho Verde area.

The first winery we visited was outstanding! The land that the winery was on was beyond describing. Also the wine was very good, so good we had to take a few bottles with us. We then went to a small town for lunch which was very enjoyable. Later in the afternoon we visited a larger and more commercial winery. The gardens there were very interesting.

Absolutely wonderful! Especially the morning wine tasting with visit to the river-the nibbles with the tasting were delicious and I especially enjoyed seeing the vegetable gardens and the incredibly old vines. We would love to go back and spend a few days here.

A fabulous day for everyone in our group, great wine, excellent guide and well worth the cost. Learnt so much about Portuguese wine and the region, thank you Peter . The lunch was also excellent. I took my 11 year old son who was also well catered for and he had a great time too. Will definitely be back for more.
