Depending on the option selected, either be picked up from your central Cooktown hotel or drive yourself to Hope Vale to meet your guide, Aboriginal Elder, Willie Gordon. Admire the views on the 45-minute drive from Cooktown, as you wind through the forests and mountains, and look out for kangaroos or cockatoos along the way.
Set out on a bush walk through the ancestral land of the Nugal-warra people and listen as your guide entertains you with stories of his ancestors. Learn about Aboriginal traditions, spiritual beliefs and their deep connection with the land, as you hike through the dramatic landscape, sample typical bush tucker and hear about bush survival techniques.
Accompanied by your Nugal-warra guide, you’ll gain access to areas usually off-limits to visitors and have chance to admire fascinating rock art, etched into the rock face. Marvel at the rich artworks in the Rainbow Serpent cave, visit an ancestral birth site where Willie's grandfather was born, and enjoy spectacular views over the highlands.
After a morning of explorations, return to the starting point to collect your car or end your tour with a transfer back to your hotel.
This tour includes around 30 minutes of walking; there is a short climb to two of the sites, but generally the terrain is easy.
If you choose the self-drive option, you will be given directions to the meeting point outside Hope Vale upon confirmation of your booking. Allow around 45-minutes drive time from Cooktown. Willie will meet you at the site gate and will guide you along an off-road track to the entrance of the site, where you continue on foot (please note that the sites are not signed as they can only be visited with a Nugal-warra Elder). The drive into the site is a bush track so if you're self driving you'll need a 4WD or highset 2WD vehicle.
