Glenorchy Movie Locations Tour: The Lord of the Rings

Meet your driver-guide upon hotel pickup in Queenstown and hop into a six-passenger 4WD for the picturesque drive to Glenorchy. You’ll see several South Island filming locations selected by director Peter Jackson and showcased in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

Hear fascinating commentary from your in-the-know guide, and stop for photo ops at landscapes you’ll instantly recognize, such as the Fortress of Isengard and Forest of Amon Hen. Approximately 12 miles (20 km) northwest of Glenorchy lies the countryside locale of Paradise, site of the Forest of Lothlorien. Your guide takes you to a charming village near the vivid waters of Lake Wakatipu, considered the ‘Gateway to Paradise.’

Make another stop at 12 Mile Delta to discover the no-man’s-land between Gondor and Mordor, known to JRR Tolkien fans as Ithilien Camp. On the return to Queenstown, enjoy hot beverages with fruit cake and cookies, and get a glimpse of additional movie locations from other films like X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Your half-day tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Travelling out from Queenstown the drive to Glenorchy and onto the Lord Of The Rings locations was very spectacular with vies of Lake Wakapito. We had a very informative guide with photos of the movie scenes so you could relate to the vision in front of you. In the forest swords and daggers together with other movie items were available for guests to wear and play with. A great morning out. Thanks Nomad.

This tour is excellent, no wasted time here. Breath taking views and scenery, excellent, easy way to get out and around town and learn a lot of interesting information about where movies were created at in the area. More than just LOTR is talked about on this tour. The guide brought along a binder full of images of movie scenes that you actually go visit, drive through, stand at. You may even get a chance to re create some famous scenes. Don't skip out on this tour if you're in Queenstown!

If you are a Lord of the Rings fan this tour is your way to see the locations for some of the film. Our guide was very knowledgeable and had pictures of what the scene looks like in the film. Our group did scene reenactments with capes and swords provided. Great fun and worth the money.
