What You Can Expect

Lake Wakatipu Cruise and Mt Nicholas High Country 4WD Tour

Lake Wakatipu cruise

Make your way to the pier at Lake Wakatipu — where scenes featured in The Lord of the Rings were staged — and depart Queenstown aboard a deluxe catamaran. Cruise across the shimmering waters of the deep blue lake with the snow-capped peaks of the Remarkables mountain range in the background.

Make yourself comfortable on the outdoor decks or take a seat indoors and look through large viewing windows while you listen to the captain’s commentary about the natural landmarks, including the Southern Alps and Mt Earnslaw. An onboard cafe serves beverages and snacks for purchase.

Disembark on the lake’s western shore to visit Mt Nicholas High Country Station, a family-run merino sheep farm. Learn about raising sheep and making wool before you transfer to your 4WD vehicle for a hilltop tour including short walks at scenic spots with your guide.

Your high country tour ends with a return catamaran cruise to the docks in Queenstown.

Very fun and relaxing trip! The boat tour of Lake Wakatipu was extremely scenic and the boat captain was an excellent guide in pointing out things of interest around the lake, including the beautiful Remarkables. All the staff at the merino sheep farm were extremely friendly and provided a great tour and delicious lunch. It was a fantastic experience seeing sheep farm and the surrounding countryside. Definitely recommend it!

Nice boat ride, very smooth and we had some rain and wind. The 4WD bus tour was very interesting. My husband and I were the only ones to go on this part the others on the tour stayed behind. They missed good views lots of info and a tour of a very old rock house. We recommend this one.

The lake cruise is essentially that...a garden variety cruise on a lake. I think the highlight is the Mt Nicholas farm visit, which though a little artificial, does give some insights into the working of a large NZ sheep and cattle establishment. The humour of our guides along the way add colour to the experience. The working sheep dog is work of mastery and obedience.

One not so good thing- when we were booking we thought "4WD tour" meant we would be driving ourselves on 4 wheelers, we didn't know it meant we'd be riding in a bus. Found out New Zealand calls the trip we were wanting "quad bikes," so we would've booked something like that instead, had we known.
