After pickup at your hotel or the airport in Quito, or in Otavalo, drive about 1.5 hours to the hacienda near Cayambe.
Stop at Quitsato to see an enormous sundial that marks the equator. Continue to the hacienda where you receive refreshments and a safety briefing to prepare for your horse ride.
The horse ride lasts from 3-5 hours depending on the experience level of the riders. The horses are mixes between Andalusians, Arabians, and local criollo horses.
During the ride, expect to see Andean villages, Ecuadorians in traditional dress, and possibly wildlife like wild horses, foxes, and birds (sometimes even condors). Take a break during the ride for a picnic lunch during the ride, then return to the hacienda for a delicious 3-course dinner.
The hacienda has cows, alpacas, llamas, and horses on the property, and offers sweeping views over the city of Cayambe, the Cayambe volcano, and, on a clear day, Quito. At night, relax near the fireplace or gaze at the stars. Stay overnight in a comfortable double room with private bath.
In the morning, have the option to go mountain biking or simply relax until your private vehicle takes you to Otavalo, located about 45 minutes away. For hundreds of years, this town's market has been one of the key trade destination in the Andes, even in pre-Inca times. Browse traditional goods sold by local villagers at the Otavalo Indigenous Market, then enjoy a 2-course lunch.
Your tour ends with transfer back to Quito in the late afternoon.
