The rocky landscape around Reykjavik tells a dramatic visual story of Iceland’s volcanic past. Begin your aerial adventure at Reykjavik Domestic Airport, where you’ll meet your experienced pilot and receive a brief safety orientation. Climb aboard a helicopter and buckle up either in the front next to your pilot or in one of the back passenger seats.
As you rise into the air and make your way east of the capital, watch all signs of civilization disappear as the rocky, lunar-like landscape comes into view. See evidence of former volcanic eruptions in the dramatic craters and rocky lava fields below, and learn about the area’s still-active geothermal properties as you watch steam rising from solfataras (volcanic vents) and bubbling mud pits.
Get a breathtaking aerial perspective on some of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions, including spouting geysers and the hissing lava fields of Hengill Geothermal area. Fly over several clean energy power plants, and listen as your pilot explains how the movement of tectonic plates below the earth’s surface releases geothermal energy that is harnessed and used to power a large portion of homes in Iceland.
After approximately 50 minutes in the air, return to solid ground at the Reykjavik airport and bid farewell to your pilot.
