Start your private tour with pickup from your Reykjavik hotel, and travel into Iceland’s interior by private, air-conditioned vehicle.
Drive into Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO-listed expanse of lava fields and peaks. See the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, and the site of Iceland’s first parliament in 930 AD, and then continue through mountains to the Lake Laugarvatn region and Geysir geothermal area.
Stroll around the bubbling hot springs and steaming vents, and watch the Strokkur geyser erupt before traveling to the Gullfoss waterfall. Marvel at the thundering waters as they plunge into a chasm, and then head to the River Hvítá for your rafting trip. This glacier river runs from the Langjökull glacier, Iceland’s second largest glacier, winding through craggy landscapes before feeding the Gullfoss waterfall.
On arrival, begin your 4-hour experience by receiving the clothing and equipment needed for your ride. Then, listen to a safety briefing and instructions on paddling techniques. No rafting experience is required.
Next, hop into a shared inflatable raft with a guide, and paddle onto the waters to navigate the river’s Class II rapids — a difficulty level suitable for novice and experienced rafters. Soak in the rolling scenery, and increase your paddle work to cross the areas of gentle rapids. Float through the Brúarhlöð canyon, whose soft breccia rock walls have been carved by the river through the centuries, and pass Brúarhlöð’s unusual rock pillars.
Afterward, relax in the base camp sauna or with a drink (own expense) at the bar, and hop inside your private vehicle to drive back to Reykjavik. Stop on route to visit the multi-colored Kerio volcanic crater, and pass the garden village of Hveragerði, famous for its hot springs and geothermally powered hothouses.
Your trip concludes with a drop-off at your Reykjavik hotel.
