What You Can Expect

Iceland Helicopter Tour from Reykjavik: Eyjafjallajökull Adventure

Eyjafjallajokull

Your aerial adventure begins with pick-up from your central Reykjavik hotel and a transfer to Reykjavík Domestic Airport. After a safety briefing, jump aboard your helicopter and take off over the capital.

Gaze out over the city as your captain points out memorable landmarks, then head east to the Hengil geothermal area. Look down over the bubbling mud pots and thermal pools as you swoop overhead, then veer south to fly over the dramatic lava fields.

Keep your camera to hand as you approach the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, the ice cap of some 100 square kilometers (39 sq miles) that tops the eponymous volcano. Listen as your pilot tells the story of its 2010 eruption and see areas of newly formed lava rock, still smoking and warm to the touch.

Touch down on the mountain ridge at Fimmvörðuháls and step out to admire the wild landscapes of the Thorsmörk National park up close. Breathe in the icy mountain air and marvel at the views, which span the mountains, rivers and valleys of the Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Tindfjallajökull glaciers.

Hop back in the helicopter for the return journey to Reykjavik, gliding over the Blue Mountain range and the black sand beaches of Iceland’s South Coast. Finally, get your camera ready for the spectacular descent into Reykjavik, where a driver will be waiting to escort you back to your hotel.

One of the most amazing and fantastic experiences of my life so far. The scenery and light was just stunning. The pilot was extremely knowledgable and gave us the most thrilling of tours. I cannot recommend this trip enough. A must do on a visit to Iceland.
