What To Expect

Your Northern Lights tour starts with pickup at your hotel in Reykjavik in the late evening for the drive outside the city. Meet up with other vehicles, and then start the search for the lights.

The route and stops you make depend on the weather and 'aurora forecast'; your driver takes you to places where you're most likely to see the lights, but of course this cannot be guaranteed due to the whims of Mother Nature. Efforts will be made to capture photos of you with the lights in the background, when possible.

Your tour ends with return to Reykjavik around midnight or 1am.

Tour vehicles have been modified with 40- or 46-inch (1- or 1.2-meter) wheels that can handle the challenging terrain of Iceland all year. They are equipped with fold-down steps for easy accessibility, leather seats, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, GPS, first-aid kit, trackwell, and other security equipment.

Please note: the tour operator reserves the right to cancel this tour at any time, depending on the weather and sky conditions. If the tour does operate but the Northern Lights aren't seen, you may try once again at no extra charge. If all nights are canceled due to weather conditions, you'll receive a refund. It is recommended that you book your tour for the first night you're in town so you can maximize your chances of sightings, in case you need to go another night. Group sizes get bigger if several nights in a row are canceled due to weather.

We had such a good time with the Superjeep Tour group, that I wouldn't just recommend this specific tour, I would actually check out the other tours that they offer too.
All I would say is wrap up as warm as you can.

Great tour, got to see the lights!
Emily_C, Apr 2022
Enjoyed the tour and got to see the northern lights! Only downside was our driver was not super friendly and there was little communication on our way out to lookout spot so the ride was slightly uncomfortable and had no clue where we were going or how long it would take. Once we met up with the other jeeps, the guide and photographer was fantastic! You can take as many photos as you want and they set up around the lights to get your the best shot. Bundle up!!!! It gets VERY cold and you will want to be outside looking for the lights. The hot cocoa and vodka at the end was a nice touch! Great way to experience such an amazing natural phenomena!
Disappointing as the Northern lights weren’t visible on this evening.
Brence_S, Apr 2022
Our guides made a commendable effort to show us the Northern lights. Unfortunately our viewing was less than optimal. It just wasn’t the right time. Our guides tried but we saw the faintest glimmer of a little bit of green. Hardly a memorable show. Our guides tried.
Excellent experience
Maitri_P, Mar 2022
It was a truly amazing experience our tour guide Simon did an excellent job on chasing the northern lights. Loved the idea of how all the superjeeps connected with each other so that we can go where the lights were.
Great Views
Mack_C, Mar 2022
We saw amazing lights last night. totally worth it. The guide named simon was really nice, and they had a professional camera taking nice pictures of us with the lights.
Must book!
Manvir_D, Feb 2022
Truly wonderful! Don't bother wasting your time with the mini buses, coaches or yachts like we originally did. Save your money and book directly with these guys. We were in Iceland for about a week and used the mini buses, coaches and yachts and were unsuccessful night after night. Just a really gutting feeling to know that our time was up in Iceland and we never saw the lights, so as we were packing on the last night with early flights to catch the next morning we decided to go all out and book a SuperJeep in a last ditch attempt to get a glimpse of the illustrious nothern lights. My heart sank when I realised I had booked the tour for the following night by mistake instead of the same night, no worries though, brilliant customer service. They understood straight away and got us a spot in one of the jeeps that night. All in all, best decision we ever made! These guys picked us up and literally chased the lights over all terrain (really safe though) spot after spot until we finally had the lights dancing in our eyes and took the best photos. Our friends back at home were so envious when we showed them! Literally worth the premium price for one of the best experiences and services in Iceland! To the tour company, thank you for a befitting end to our time in Iceland!
Def worth doing!

Magical night
Debbie_H, Feb 2022
Fabulous from start to finish. Fun to travel in the jeep and head off road. Glad we wrapped up warm and we were able to enjoy the most amazing, magical northern lights. Hot chocolate was good too xx
Magical - couldn't have been better just wear lots of socks!
Sam_G, Jan 2022
This tour was like heading out on a nighttime safari, searching for the northern lights in a small convoy of around 4-5 other super-jeeps, accessing areas others couldn't go. There was excitement and energy, even though we only had a 50/50 chance of finding them (the operator cancels the trip if they think theres 0% chance of seeing them) and we headed out in a snowstorm (didn't look good). We stopped for around 15 mins but without joy. Got cold feet - wear lots of warm socks! We headed off again with the other cars conversing via radio. A car in front thought he saw a tiny flash in the sky so we changed direction like raptors and after what seemed like a short while there they were, very light in the sky forming a huge arc. Our guide excitedly pointed them out and we found a place beside a loch to observe on foot. It was the most magical setting. The lights got stronger and danced for us. I was quite surprised how different they looked through the camera lens (brighter than with the naked eye - more pigmented) I used my iPhone on night setting and then enhanced to sharpen the colour (we also received professional photos of the evening the next day by email so theres no need to obsess about getting the shot, and we were reminded to just watch and absorb the beauty). Hot chocolate with a heavy glug of vodka was passed around to celebrate and we were all jubilant including all the guides! We had celebratory music on the way home. Very very happy. Lots of banter and info from our guide meant the time passed quickly in the jeep. We liked his energy, he was having fun. 'Icelanders believe in themselves and their country', he said. 'We believe anything is possible if you put your mind to it'. Thats the guy you want to go hunting the Aurora with, even if theres only a mall chance of finding them.
Great to experience

They tried their best, driving round looking for clear skies. Was an experience but unfortunately weather wasn’t on our side

Chasing the Northern Lights
Stephanie_A, Dec 2021
The lead guide did a fantastic job of explaining the lights, and went out of his way to take us to multiple locations to see them. And the hot chocolate with a splash of something extra is my new favorite way to drink hot chocolate!
Great experience
Tanyaj85, Dec 2021
Tour guides did not give up on trying to find the right location for us to see the lights despite getting hit with snow storms every 5 mins. The hot chocolate was a lovely Gesture and went down very well.
Once in a lifetime experience
Leanne_P, Nov 2021
I cannot rate this experience highly enough. The superjeeps are able to go off-roading and go to places that the normal buses can’t. We went out on a night that didn’t have great visibility or activity. The drivers were beyond amazing and never gave up trying. Eventually wen went over some sand dunes and ended up on a beach where we finally saw the lights. Such a magical experience.
An unforgettable night
Marina_K, Oct 2021
What an unforgettable excursion. Our guide was friendly and was able to efficiently communicate with other drivers to find the best spot to see the northern lights and take photos. My fiancé proposed making the night truly magical!
Awesome Northern Lights Display
Rochele_B, Oct 2021 was amazing—very organized and efficient. Our driver was personable and professional. We were lucky enough to see quite a display. The northern lights were very active and colorful. I tried 2 other northern lights tour providers and was by far the best. Highly recommend. Of course, they can’t control the lights so there’s no guarantee, but they are very good at what they do.
Great northern lights tour!

Easy hotel pickup On time Fun guides Cool vehicle Amazing northerlights!!! Guides worked to ensure good viewing and good photos by the guides
Great way to experience the Northern Lights
Laura_P, Oct 2021
If you want to do a Northern Lights tour in Iceland, take my word and pay the extra money for a Superjeep tour! It's well worth going out in a smaller group and vehicle to be able to go off road to the places the buses can't go. Our first attempt and seeing the Northern Lights was very faint so they said we could go again. After a couple of nights of cancellations due to the weather, we went out on our last night in Iceland and were treated to an absolutely amazing Northern Lights show and got some fantastic pictures!
Amazing Tour
Lauren_B, Dec 2020
This was the highlight of our trip!!! Definitely worth it!!! Take this tour over the bus tours, these are more personal and get you off the main road. The hot chocolate and vodka was delicious also!

Absolutely wonderful!
Brian_M, Mar 2020
This trip was phenomenal! I would highly recommend it. The tour guides were adamant to give us the northern lights experience and they did! Was one of the most spectacular sights I’ve ever seen! The hot chocolate and vodka was an added bonus! All I would say is wrap up as warm as you can.
Great Way to "Hunt" the Northern Lights
Christina_S, Jan 2020
My husband was thrilled with this tour before we even left. He saw the Land Rover Defender, that we were going to ride in, and he was more excited than the kids. My husband and our guide talked about everything on the way to our meet-up point with the other groups - life in Iceland, cars, family life, photography, etc Needless to say, our guide was very friendly and we got to know him pretty well. We went to three different locations to try to see the lights. They say the most difficult part about trying to see the lights is patience. However, our guides kept us entertained the whole time - pointed out the different constellations and the milky way to our kids, regaled us with stories about life in Iceland, explained to us what exactly are the Northern Lights and brought hot chocolate for us. On our third stop at 1am, we finally saw the lights! I am so thrilled that I can check this off our bucket list and never have to play this game of "will it be good weather to see the lights" or "will the lights show up tonight". The next day we were on another tour and we spoke to some people who had also gone out to try to see the Northern Lights the same night that we did. They said that they got on a tour bus with forty other people, drove to one location, waited for two hours and then all piled back into the bus and went back to Reykjavik without seeing the Northern Lights. I am so glad that we went with the Superjeep Tour and they "hunted" the Northern Lights. It was a bit of a late night, but I was ecstatic that we actually got to see this phenomenon. We had such a good time with the Superjeep Tour group, that I wouldn't just recommend this specific tour, I would actually check out the other tours that they offer too.
